We stayed for a week in a rental cottage on Lake Pocomoonshine.  It was a wonderful experience!  Two bass fisherman the week before us caught 150 fish in one day!  The water is so pure you can shower in it and many cottages draw from the lake for general (non-drinking) use!  The cottages mostly line the eastern shore so your morning view is unspoiled by humanity!  Only one or two boats out on the lake at any given time gives a truly individual experience.  Small rivers with banks lined by water lilies feed and drain the lake.  A few beaver dams add interest to the scenery.  We went in early August and were not bothered at all by insects.  We only used insecticide one day when we went shooting sporting clays in the woods.  Warm days and cool nights.  Smores over an open fire pit.  Put the kids to bed and then a nice single malt (and rarely a cigar!) by the fire. Moonlight shimmering on the lake and a million stars in the sky.  I spent almost every day either swimming or boating or kayaking on the lake and never once saw the aforementioned snakes so I think this may be a rumor concocted by the locals to keep out the tourists!  My only warning is that there is not much going on nearby.  There are a few modest-appearing restaurants but this is mainly a cook-on-your-own experience.  But what a delightful experience it is if you want to get away from civilization surrounded by unspoiled wilderness on a pristine lake!

This is a magical lake that everyone wants to live on! The locals do try to keep it to themselves... and I understand this completely... the snakes are mostly gone because of the new bass population... I lived there for thirteen years and saw only half a dozen snakes the entire time... The only time there is lake traffic is during the two annual bass tournaments, otherwise there are only kayaks, canoes and a few small motor boats. It is the most beautiful, most peaceful place on this planet and I would give my right arm to be back there watching the sun sets and waking to the song of the loons.

the owner is a hoot, selection of accomodation types (outhouse to indoor plulmbing), fishing, swimming and beautiful scenery. You'll love this place to be in that picture you see or great fishing and other local sights.

I was up in Washington County last summer on a fishing vacation. While I was getting a haircut in Calais the woman cutting my hair was asking me about what I was doing up there on vacation. When I told her I had been fishing that morning on Pocomoonshine Lake, she actually paused for a second with a confused look, and then, yes, she actually proclaimed, "OH, Snake Lake!". Apparently that is what the locals call it.Aren't all of these lakes populated with the same water snakes? Anyway, the fishing was OK. It is shallow and rocky, and there are no buoys, so bring a spare prop.

I have fished this lake a few times myself. Yes I have also come across a few water snakes. It’s a shallow lake and a nice place for snakes to live.

I stayed here this year and think I will come back again. These cabins were very secluded and had an awesome lake view. My husband and I were very happy during our stay as the cabin was clean and the appeared to be very relaxing. We'll be back again for sure.

Actually Maine is the only state with no posonous snakes. Do a google search and see for yourself. Unless you have a phobia or are a nut case, what's the problem with a few snakes? Pocomoonshine is a very pretty lake.

Well it looks like the locals are trying to keep Pokey to themselves. Over 55 years of visiting this lake and I may have seen 5 or 6 snakes in total. I have seen more in my own backyard in sixteen years. I have enjoyed many activities from swimming, boating and fishing. I find this lake to be a lovely, quiet and relaxing place that I too would like to keep to myself. But would that be fair.

We have been coming here for over 20 years. If you want a peaceful, relaxing place to fish, swim, explore that is part of an over 4200 acre wildlife refuge, this is the place for youe. Want to see loons, an occasional moose feeding in the Maine river of try your luck catching large and smallmouth bass, this is the place for you. A bit of a drive as it is 5 hours from when you enter Maine on Rt 95 in Kittery, basically go north to Bangor and take a right for 2 hours (if you enter Calais you have gone too far), you can also fly into Bangor and rent a car.In response to the previous entries, we have seen only a couple of snakes over the past 20 years. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel and restaurant location, this place is not for you. If you are looking for Maine at its best, come to Downeast Maine.

Some snakes yes, but not infested. Besides it's fun to watch them slither around (harmlessly). Boat traffic has increased dramatically in the last 5 years, especially due to the new launch. Fishing and swimming has definitely gone downhill. Not really worth the trip unless you live closeby.

This is a very snake infested lake. Do not go here unless you like snakes
