When I moved from "the city"/St. Albans to "the suburbs"/Valley Stream August 28, 1956 (though it was only 4 miles away--it was a world away) the Green Acres Mall had just opened and we LOVED shopping there as it was such a beautiful mall. My friends and I all hung out at "The Mall"--Sam Goody's (sale three 45's/records for $1), Golden Crust Pizza (15 cents a slice), the bowling Alley (35 cents a game), Walgreens--(25 cents for a huge ice cream float). Then in 1960-1961 most of us were 16 and we had after school jobs at The Mall-- Newberry's, Lane's, Woolworth's, Gimbels, JC Penney's, etc (way before Sears, Macy's-even Alexander's) earning $1 to $ 1.15 an hour!!! After our night shift was over, my friend, Vicki, (4'9") and I (5'1") and both us weighing a combined total of about 180/190 pounds (we were petite girls) would WALK home (15 minutes) from the mall at 9/10pm as it was totally and completely SAFE. I moved to Florida in 1971 but from what I have read, the shopping experience/situation is much different at the Green Acres Mall now...that's such a shame as many happy memories about the Green Acres Mall are recorded in my old diaries....

I used to go to this mall a lot when I lived in Elmont in the early 2000s. My spouse worked there, so I was a regular attendee. I'm really annoyed that so many people are bad-mouthing the mall because of all the "black" people that go there. Crime and deterioration are a result of poverty, not race. Yes, the mall is located in a low income area but I have to hand it to the mall for keeping open during all the changes in the neighborhood. I was at Sunrise Mall a few weeks ago, and that mall seems worse than this one and even more unsafe, and it mainly has a "white" clientele. How is that possible? Anyway, some more security and better anchor stores would make this better. I guess you'll never see a Lord and Taylor or Bloomies here because those aren't "black" people stores.

The mall it self is somewhat clean, with a number of brand name stores such as Macy. Target, Best buy etc. However depending on your taste these franchises are a bit down scaled compared to other areas.Or course the stores are spaced out all over the car park area so if you don't have a car, be prepared to wear sensible shoes to walk to where you want to go.Taxis are available near Applebee's if you need one.Not bad for shopping on those quick trips and you don't have time to pop into Manhattan for a little more variety.

Green Acres mall and the restaurants that surround the mall cater to the black community. I live close by and will only shop here when I know what I want and it's a quick trip in and out. If I want to shop I generally drive to Roosevelt Field.

This is your TYPICAL Mall. Anchored by MACY's, JCPenney and Kohl's, the mall offers a variety of different big name merchants. What I didn't care for was the Mall Management's decision to REPAVE the parking lot on a SATURDAY afternoon - potentially the busiest shopping day of the week. It made finding a parking spot nightmarish and detracted from my experience! On the "up-side", they offered a kid-friendly, indoor Trick-or-Treat Halloween party that allowed local residents to dress their children up and receive free goodies.

worked here when i was a kid in the 80's..mall was once a mixture of white, black and hispanic...now mostly black..i do not let intimidate me...but my husband does not want me shopping here at all anymore!!--..i only shop at macys then i usually leave especially if i am alone!!..i do not drive a luxury car so theft has never been an issue-- also had a nasty shopgal at alexanders to deal with..not good! .. my oldest relatives tell me this was a very good safe mall up to the mid 80's...proceed with caution used to work at at brooks fashions and the ugly managers mary and roberta..were scarier than alot of other loonies in the mall--..ps the bathrooms by the food courts courts had roaches yick!! sadly according to older relatives all the higher-end stores like franklin simon..canadians..wild pair, pants place plus, cardinal shops, the corsetorium are gone!! spoke to several regional managers these stores vacated due to thefts..robberies..bounced checks..and high rents..really a shame..

Why is this hoodlum/hoodrat infested mall still here? They need to shut this place down already! I stopped shopping here years ago, and I"m so thrilled that I live further away from this mall than I used to. Between the unpleasant sales people who sell you items you didn't ask for and then argue with you about it until you are blue in the face, as well as the customers who fight with each other in the middle of the mall until security drags them away, I don't know what I miss less about this mall. I don't know what the point was of remodeling this mall either, people stopped shopping here about 20 years ago. All Green Acres Mall's remodeling proves is that you can put as much lipstick on a pig as you feel like, but at the end of the day it's still a pig!

Horrible mall, lucky if your car is in the lot when you return! Too many roaming kids, just don't feel safe.

This is the first place we went to once in NY, we needed a GPS and phones for our trip and a few other things to go with us. We found the service here great and each shop we went into was pleasant and the people were more then willing to help us. Applebees here was the first place we dined at also and i couldn't fault it. my trip was actually 2012

This mall is a dump! Security is a joke. The mall in Daytona beach across from speedway has much better selection and customers shopping. Stay far away or fend for your life.

I'm sorry to announce this, Buy this area is off limits to me and mine. This is where several people we're shot at the Green Acres movie theater during the movie The Godfather part 3.Yes, Inside the movie theater. People being robbed as they walk to their car to put gifts in the truck, one women was pushed into her trunk and the criminal drove off with her in it.

One of the original malls on Long Island. It was recently refreshed and now has a more modern feel to it. Several upscale stores have been added and the lighting has been improved. Our local weekly paper reports on shoplifting at the mall, and they have their (un)fair share. The security department is quite good and you should feel safe while you shop.

I dislike malls..my neighbour was mugged at roosevelt field..another at the massapequa mall..first off majority of shoppers are black, hispanic..pakastani..being white we are now the minority!! i only go to macys and one or two other stores. worked here in schooltime back in the 80's it was abit better then...i do not go to this mall alone and never at night. far cry from when my mom and aunts came..stayed till late then crossed the parking lot to the now defunct Green Acres bowl...it was alas much safer then...ps public bathroom in food court had..ROACHES! i reported them on this!! stick to macy's restrooms..macy's is the classiest and cleanest store here!! prices are lower here than in roosevelt field which i must say has much more upscale shops..more white people shopping and is supposed to be safer!!
