I am beyond happy that this park (right behind where I live) was not closed due to lack of funds. They got smart and started to charge a small fee to enter. This zoo of rescued animals is unbelievably kept and so fun to visit. There's a buffalo, owls, Nubian goats and much more to see at this site. You can see the animals are well-cared for and it is so educational. There is also an Olympic-sized pool and a great running trail ... all in an area that was once a garbage dump! Incredible things have been done at this park. While there, visit the museum. There's even a case that holds garbage from the '70s that did not decompose. Among the items: an old Coke bottle, record album and a newspaper!

We used to go to the Ecology Site almost weekly when I was a child and now, my husband and I take our son there. It's small but a nice place to take kids. My son loves the animals. There is a playground and picnic area as well as a Town pool. There is also a walking trail (I've never been on the trail, but heard it is a nice walk.)

This is the site of a former recycling center. Look carefully; there are pipes in "the hill," probably for methane venting. But now, there is a fitness trail, with equipment (?) passively maintained, as well as a mini "zoo" and greenhouse. Brookhaven residents gain access at reduced or free rates, while neighboring Islip residents pay to play. Nevertheless, younger kids thrill to the animal visits, from goats to bears, chickens, ponies, fox, eagles, etc. (The "younger set" even know their names, and were saddened to learn of the passing of a favorite pig, some time ago.)For a "local' trip, it's worth it, be it with youngsters or folks who want an active or passive workout. (You can challenge yourself accordingly.Glad Brookhaven opted to keep the facility open, even if it needs a fee from non-residents.

We make a point to go here often. It is small enough so it doesn't take up the whole day, yet big enough to spend a couple hours. Small children can handle walking the entire zoo. It is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. It has a wide range if animals and birds. Plus, each is labeled with interesting facts. The admission is free but there is a donation box which we always give a few dollars. The staff is friendly and if you catch them inside by the animals they are more than willing to answer questions. After your visit, you can go to the playground or grab a snack, seasonally open, and relax by the picnic tables or in the overhead pavilion. There is also a walking track which is pleasant as well. I highly recommend spending an afternoon here. It is local, fun, educational and inexpensive.

Even if you don't have children, the Holtsville park is a wonderful place. There are always many walkers using the track around the park, there is a wonderful zoo which showcases disabled animals, and of course the public pool in the summer is a favorite spot for many. But if you have children, it will become a favorite spot for your family! I am lucky to live across the street, and enjoy it almost daily!

This place is wonderful! I have been going there since the 1980's with my kids~! The zoo for disabled animals is the favorite of kids..they have bears, cougars american bald eagles deer buffalo goats llamas fox and much more! I haven't been there in a while, but you can walk the mile around the composting, a favorite for runners, walkers and bikers alike! There are swing sets for the kids, picnic area and in summer a snack bar. I believe the pools are still open to the town of brookhaven residents, but I am not sure about that, call first. But all in all...it is a wonderful and practical recycling , learning and fun facility! check it out!

What a wonderful place for the youngsters. We've been bringing our 3 year old granddaughter here since she was one, and she loves it. She gets to see and learn about the animals in closer, less crowded environment than the major zoos afford. She loves to run ahead and call us to "Follow Me" as she heads to her favorite exhibits. Now, we sometimes bring our one year old grandchild with us. The 3 yr old loves to "explain" to her younger cousin all the things she is looking at. Then, a short walk away is a children's playground. Joy, wonder, and fun all at no cost. It doesn't get much better.
