We visited the Vanderbilt Museum in July 2014. It was a great trip and we throughly enjoyed it. I like the way the mansion is located on a hill and is considered one of many 'Gold Coast Mansions' from the early part of the 1900's with a lot of rich history from wealthy business people. The property sits on 43 acres of vast grass lands and consists of multiple properties such as the planetarium among other properties that are not open to the public. There beautiful views everywhere from the ocean, flower beds, and interesting animals running through the area. Inside the mansion, I do like that the former Mr. Vanderbilt himself made it his life's mission to travel the world and collect rare and unique artifacts as his collection. Those collections are what now makes up the mansion museum; really cool stuff. I had a lot more better pictures, but my SD card messed up.

Convenient, informative, easy on the wallet. Plenty of parking and close to other venues.Next available town is Huntington.

The Vanderbilt is one of the magnificent mansions built on Long Islands North Shore by the industrialist Vanderbilt family. There is history, science and even a few curiosities to be seen and experienced there. The newly rehabilitated Planetarium is terrific but I thing the most impressive thing about this property is just that, the property. It is sited on an absolutely stunning perch overlooking the harbor and Long Island sound. The grounds and the views are breathtaking...worth the trip for them alone.

We visited the planetarium and mansion. We see the Earth, Moon, and Sun feature at the planetarium. It is more suited for young children. We took the mansion tour with Rick as our guide. We had 2 children under 8 and Rick was great at calling them by name to keep them focused. The public tour areas are also nice to see.

my husband and I took three kids to see this new show Sight and Sound over the holidays. One was 13 years ,4years, and 11. We were excited and the show was packed. Well sorry to say it was so boring ,I can't believe my kids were so well behaved. I'm an artist and I was so surprised with all the new technology, how terrible the visuals were. the artwork was awful. The narrator was so monotone, and there was too much information for anyone to sit that long. I think most people feel asleep. Yes it was only $5 but I would not see any of those again. the rest of the museum was great. I hope someone takes over the production of those scripts and brings it into 2015

Love the planetarium. Too bad some of the exhibits are closed now for renovations. Hall of fish is a fun place fore the kids.

A friend and I recently went to the Vanderbilt Museum. During the h olidays they, on just a few days allow you to actually go through the living quarters. They were beautiful decorated with many Christmas trees and decorations. I believe the local garden clubs and volunteers did it. It was very interesting. They let small groups go every 15 minutes. The guide Barbara at the start was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We asked her many questions and she answered them all. There were guides in every room we went into and they told us about the occupants and their families and the furniture and antiques. They were wonderful and also very knowledgeable. All in all it was very interesting. After the tour we were treated to cookies and hot chocolate. Great tour.

You have to pay extra to tour the house. I had a great tour guide that knew his facts. The tour was supposed to be 45min but it turned out to be an 1hr and 15 minutes. The house overlooks long island sound. There is seating in each room if you can't stand up for long. On a clear day you can see The Port Jefferson Ferry. There is a good amount of things to see. In the summer you can tour more things and walk around the gardens.

Went on the 45-minute house tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion, with its many detailed, glamorous and period-piece-filled rooms being "gussied up" for the Christmas holiday. Our guide was very knowledgeable (of course), entertaining, personable, and we learnt a great deal (gossip, historical, etc.) about William Kissam Vanderbilt II, his family, his wealth, and his Spanish Revival-styled summer home, Eagle's Nest. Holiday decorations added a very warm touch, the view to the north of the water, Asharoken, Eaton's Neck, and further off, Connecticut is jaw-dropping, as is the expansive 40-acre property and sheer self-indulgence of Mr. Vanderbilt. We visited in the winter and, although it is nice enough at this time of year, I can only imagine how much prettier it is when the rose garden and greenery are in full bloom!

I've been to other planetariums; this one was average. The show was less than an hour and the room was comfortable. Sit in the back if possible so that you'll be able to view the entire ceiling. They cancelled the show that we were supposed to see and substituted another one on a star's life cycle. It was interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately, they also cancelled the rooftop viewing that was supposed to follow the show. The Planetarium is part of (but separate from) the Vanderbilt Museum (which would require a longer visit in warmer weather).

This makes for a good family trip if you are on Long Island. The location on the coast is very beautiful, so it makes for a nice excursion for the adults. The planetarium is exciting for the kids. Some of the exhibits are a little dry (not very interactive) so it may not hold the attention of young kids.

I took my 12 year old son here for a show. It was very interesting, but on the short side, time-wise. It is an inexpensive attraction though.

We went to the planetarium expecting a decent laser show set to music. Most of the graphics were psychedelics - made everyone in our party dizzy - had to leave show and requested refund for payment. Many people left the show - clerks need to rethink visuals for their paying customers. There was a long pause between songs and visuals, not time well. This is the worst planetarium show I have ever been to. Don't waste your money or time.

an excellent property, great view if inlet.house tour was good, and the museum "rooms" within the house, were very interesting.the furnishings are of little interest--dark heavy oak, paintings are only portraits , also of little interest.stories of Vanderbilt family quite enjoyable.didn't do planetarium.
