Unbelievable beautiful place for nature's lovers! We went at end of December 2014 on a road trip from Florida do CO & NM. This part of the trip - from Boulder, CO to Los Alamos, NM was really the most beautiful. We need to stop the car every few miles to take pictures.... was cold.. really cold. At the top of the pass was -25oF !!! Lot's of trails for cross-country skiing, etc. We definitely will be back on summer for camping.

Hiked in the South San Juan Wilderness Area, which is part of the Rio Grande National Forest. Started at Three Forks Trail Head to Blue Lake (Day 1); Blue Lake to Lake Ann (Day 2) ; Lake Ann back to trail head (Day 3).There is good trout fishing at Blue Lake. The hike on the Continental Divide is gorgeous. You cannot actually see Lake Ann, and you should hike a 1/8 - 1/4 mile down Middle Fork Trail to find a good camping site. Water is abundant.

There are some beautiful areas in the Rio Grande National Forest. Visit the campgrounds in Creede, like River Hill or Big Meadows Campground outside of South Fork. There's great fishing at the reservoirs as well as at Poag Lake and Pass Lake.

if you're an outdoorsman, this is the nat'l forest in colorado to experience. crowds are minimal, except for july and august. sept is my favorite month because the tourists are gone and all the peaks and passes are hikable w/ no to little snow. lots of elk, grouse, minerals, fossils. on a typical hike in june or sept you might see 1-5 other people per day, but on the more remote trails solitude. many beaver dams make little ponds not on maps for great brook trout fishing.
