This is almost 40 miles from Zion Visitor Center. The freeway speeds are higher there, so will not take much time once you hit I-15. The views from the road are good. But the road itself is not too long, so OK for a quick visit in the evening. The trail to natural bridge is like 14 miles and we did not try it this winter. Maybe next time....

We enjoyed this drive, but might have enjoyed it a bit more if we had the Zion brochure which is received at the entrance to the Park which we had not visited prior to taking this drive. It was a nice "preview" to Zion Canyon itself.

Took the motorcycle up to Kolob Reservoir yesterday. The meadows, canyons and rock formations are stunning. This is a constant climb from Virgin, topping out at over 8,000 ft and a slow go due to narrow and twisting road. Speed limit is 35, so don't plan on a quick run. Most of the road is open year round but about the last 3rd of the way is closed when snow arrives. A great drive in the summer or early autumn for fall colors. Don't expect the reservoir to be the highlight of this drive. It's not the destination that makes this drive worth your time , it is the journey.

We went to Kolob Terrace Road as a break from the crowds in the Canyon. The gentle Northgate Peaks Trail was also an attraction. It is a beautiful trail through meadows and forests to an overlook toward Zion Canyon. A great spot to eat your lunch. After the hike keep on driving to Lava Point, Edge of the Plateau for another viewpoint.

Nice Camping around the lake. Good Fishing. Beautiful part of Zion National Park. Some of the roads in this area are Dirt and not suitable for nice cars; trucks and SUV's should do fine. Most cars should stay on the paved roads.

Well worth the drive. We didn't hike up there, but the drive was very nice. There are mountains and meadows, deer and cattle (on the road). The reservoir at the end wasn't worth the drive, though.

This doesn't get the numbers of Zion but is a nice drive and worth stopping off to do a couple of hikes although some require permits. There is a reservoir at the end of the road and some great views on a couple of dirt track roads. Make sure you have food and water because there's nothing much else up there.

Do the drive to the Reservoir and be mesmerized by the blueness of the waters.Hiking is just a car stop and a walk in non directional ways.Let your senses be your guide...So many wonderful hikes to inhale...I remember just sitting there until I heard a grasshopper hop by; I said hello and the grasshopper said goodbye!This day only ended when the thoughts of enjoying a Snickers began to take control.And the earth did not stop spinning...

While the trails accessed from the Springdale entrance to Zion National Park get a lot of well-deserved attention, Kolob Terrace Road will give you access to some excellent walks and hikes, not to mention spectacular scenery, while taking you out of the Springdale crowds. Lava Point, the highest spot in the park (and a good place to look for California Condors) is accessed from this road. Wildcat Canyon Trail, the West Rim Trail, the Subway, Northgate Peaks, and the Hop Valley Trail are also accessed from Kolob Terrace Road. There are innumerable lookout spots and spectacular vistas along the road, which passes close to Tabernacle Dome. It dead-ends at Kolob Reservoir - a good place to look for water birds if you are a birdwatcher. This area is higher and cooler than the Springdale area, too.

Escape from the crowds to Kolob terrace road. The drive takes you through scenic plains and ends up at the reservoir. Take a right a few miles before the reservoir on the dirt road and you'll end up at Lava point - a great place to see Zion from another angle. I combined this drive with a trip to Kolob canyon - perfectly doable in a day.

One of the locals told us about this drive up to Lava Point and the view over the canyon. We were told it takes about 45 minutes each way. Well it took us over an hour one way and that was speeding most of the time. The road is narrow with lots of twists and turns. Signage was not good and we missed several turns. Good thing we had a map and our GPS to help find our way. Towards the top we were on a dirt road and had to go through a very large and deep puddle across the whole road. I was afraid the car would get stuck in the mud but we didn't. Upon finally reaching Lava Point the view was good but not worth the long drive IMHO.

We started in Virgin and climbed the amazing 4000 vertical feet to Kolob Reservoir. Views of the park from the west are amazing, the road and terrain are breathtaking. After arriving at Kolob Reservoir, we took Upper Basin road (accessible through a gate marked Spillsbury Family Ranch) which is a county road and over another 20 miles of graded well maintained roads, came out on hwy 91 just at the north end of Kanarraville (just south of Cedar City). We spoke to an Iron County Deputy who advised that we would be fine on the road as long as we closed any gates we had to open to proceed as the ranchers have about 8 installed. Spectacular alternative to the traditional views and route, family loved it. Totally passable in any stock suv, wouldn't try it in a car.

Kolob Terrace Road was our introduction to Zion National Park and it was our favorite part of the entire park. It's relatively deserted here and the views are incredible. Go slow. Take in the views and enjoy the beauty of Kolob.

The Crew and I were up working in Cedar City last week and after work I took a ride up Kolob Terrace Road on the way back to Cedar. You start out in Virgin Utah and head up the Canyon towards Kolob Lake. The drive gives you great views of red rocks and the forest,You wind up at Kolob Lake which is way down due to Drought this last year. From the lake you can continue on on a dirt road ( County maintained) and come out on old County 91 just south of Cedar City. A great drive if you are in a 4wd or just a Pickup. The Meadows were all in bloom with yellow and purple flowerers and the greenest grass of the year. Made for some great photos and memories. I will be going back again next week for more work in the area and will be taking this Long Cut back from St George to Cedar again.

Beautiful drive on a well paved road. Turning onto Lava Point Road there were some pot holes but we were in a Toyota Corolla and had no problem. Gorgeous view from the top of lava point. Worth the drive.
