Henderson Lewelling helped slaves escape in his role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. A trap door in the floor of his kitchen led to a tunnel through which slaves could be quickly moved if danger approached. On his grounds, Lewelling was also a pioneer agriculturalist and developed the Bing cherry. Hundreds of trees were moved by wagon to the west coast where the industry really began. Salem is a fascinating community to visit and the Lewelling Museum is the special treat.
