DOS 8/31/2014 - Halfway through an afternoon road trip to nowhere in particular, my husband and I took the ferry across the Mississippi River from Cassville, WI to Guttenberg, IA and discovered PromiseLand Winery at the turn onto the county highway. Since we like wineries and we were right there we decided to stop and check it out.First impressions: Impressive building but the parking area is a free-for-all with no lines, people were parking straight and at angles. There is a nice patio outside with umbrella-covered tables where patrons can sit outside and enjoy a glass or bottle of wine with cheese and sausage (you can purchase those inside). The interior had two bars, many tables and a large room that appeared to be available for rental for parties with a kitchen on one side. There were four additional rooms off the banquet room that contained numerous items for sale. There was no signage about tastings, and while I did not consider the number of people at the counter/bar to be significant, the woman who finally attended to us was harried and distracted. I asked if they offered tastings and the cost. Her response was a bit short, saying that they did and they didn't charge. I then asked for a wine list and she responded that they didn't have one and gestured to the lineup of wines at the end of the counter saying, "Those are all of the wines."The tasting: Unimpressive. With no wine list, our attendant asked what we liked "dry or sweet", and I asked if we could start from the top (driest-to-sweetest). She gave a frustrated/exaspirated sigh, grabbed a bottle of red for me (husband opted for sweet wines), poured a sample and walked away; this was the procedure for all seven wines. No explanation was given for any of the wines, no background nor descriptions about grapes or pairings. The labels on the bottles were also not much help with only one of them listing the type of grape used. The conclusion: Ultimately, we enjoyed one variety of their wines, "Cabin Fever". The rest were forgettable, and the first red I tried tasted as if it was bottled too early and needed to age a little longer. The lack of signage and wine lists for tastings and overall feeling that we were disturbing the woman attending us with our questions, left us shrugging with indifference. So why 3 stars? The "Cabin Fever" wine is a nice, sweet wine and when chilled, definitely can hit the spot on a hot day. Their patio area was full of people and had nice seating and the setting, tucked back against a heavily-treed hill was pretty. The choice of decor on the interior could work really well for a small wedding or large family get-together with its Italian flair.I'd like to see some signage about tastings as well as a wine list with descriptions of the wines. Our attendant may have been having an "off" day. I can't say that I would go out of my way to stop here again, though if I were passing by, I may stop to see if things have improved.
