The president of the Elkader Historical Society met us at the Carter House Museum after we e-mailed her about our visit. She is a lovely lady and very knowledgeable about the area, the house and its occupants, as well as the furnishing and antiques which are almost all original. The large house built in 1855 is a paradise for antique lovers. There are old dolls, toys, medical instruments (including an actual skeleton!) an icebox, many kitchen gadgets, and displays of lovely period dresses. Touring the Carter House gives a marvelous glimpse into the past. There is also a large display dedicated to Emir Abdulkader of Algeria after whom the town was named. We greatly enjoyed the experience!
