Bever Park was once the largest zoo/park in the city of Cedar Rapids. Its zoos included tigers, lions, monkeys, ostriches, bears and wolves. As time passed, the citizens realized the animals needed better conditions. In a unique before/after display that conservationists should appreciate, the only wire fences were removed after pictures were taken but the artificial "dens" which once housed the animals were kept. Today visitors can see the enlarged pictures and understand the need for change which the city embraced. Old McDonald's Farm remains a popular attraction with dozens of animals in a farm-like setting. Well-maintained playground equipment in addition to a fire-truck for climbing on gives kids plenty to do. A great place for picnics or a casual stroll.
