gammelgarden museum

We love visiting the Gammelgarden on days when there are people dressed up and giving tours. It is a very fun and educational living history museum. Great for all ages.

This is a beautiful old 1800's farm where the local priest and his family lived near the church. It has been converted to an open air museum. There are original buildings and an attractive 2 story museum and gift shop. We took a guided tour through Gammelgarden and enjoyed it very much. We learned about the history of the area and the farm itself from our knowledgeable and friendly guide. For people interested in Swedish immigrant history, this is a must see.

We visited this lovely museum about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities on a glorious autumn day. Our docent was a young girl well versed in many aspects of the mid 19th century Swedish immigration to America--the reasons for leaving Sweden, for choosing Minnesota as their new home, the cultural, religious, agricultural artifacts, their aspirations. Particularly beautiful are some of the painted objects belonging to the early settlers. Of particular interest to needleworkers are the various cross stitch and embroidered linens in some of the buildings., The original church building is fascinating. Found many items in the gift shop for Swedish friends and to add to our personal collections. A great museum for families with young children.

Gammelgarden in Scandia is off the beaten track but if you are interested in your personal history or genealogy it is a great place to visit. The gift shop is very extensive and features lots of Scandinavian themed items with fairly good prices. Definitely a place to visit if you are descended from the Swedish immigrants who settled this beautiful area.

Vi är från Sverige och var på USA-semester och besökte bla svenskbygderna. Det var ungefär som en hembygdsgård hemma i Sverige. Man kunde gå på visning för några dollar men vi gjorde inte det. Vi tog en liten broschyr i stället och tittade runt på olika byggnader. Det påminde lite om Dalarna med dalahästen utanför fast de ser lite annorlunda ut. Inne i den stora byggnaden fanns det en souvenirbutik med olika sverigesaker, böcker osv. Trevligt. Vad vi saknade var ett lite café där man kunde fika och då med lite svenskt kaffebröd som t ex kanelbullar. Det ordnas med lite olika aktiviteteter som vid Lucia, Jul och Midsommar.
