This was recommended to us by a volunteer at Mineview in the sky and I'm so glad we made the effort.Although it was a wet and misty afternoon we couldn't fail to be impressed with the sheer scale of the Hull Rust mines. We counted at least eight dump trucks working and numerous dozers and mining machines. The volunteers at the visitor centre were helpful, offering much more background into both the mining operations and the surrounding areas.I can't imagine anyone not being impressed with this. We certainly plan to return again, hopefully on a clear day.

This visitor's center at the edge of the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine provided an excellent view of the mine. It was unfortunate we couldn't' see much activity. The visitors center is dated, but that is not surprising since it seems to be run by older volunteers. I got the impression they need new, younger volunteers to spruce the place up. Regardless, it was a nice visit and I would recommend stopping here.

OK, it free. You look out over the biggest manmade hole you will ever see. The little ladies behind the counter we polite and persistent. There was a super multipage color handout from the Minnesota Mining Organization. The was a two page typed fact sheet for Hill Rust. There was a video loop from Cliffs. They have mining equipment around the lookout. There was a volunteer, who was outstanding. We were early and had him to ourselves. Spend two hours here and you will learn more about Taconite mining than Minnesota Discovery Center and the Minnesota Mining Museum put together. Oh, did I mention it was free!

We went to the mine view after taking the actual mine tour, and despite not being close up, much preferred this. We were able to take pictures, and the ladies staffing the shop on site were superb! They were knowledgeable, friendly, and so helpful. Plus I found some unique souveniers to satisfy my Scandanavian soul. A great place to stop, highly recommend it.

We hadn't planned on stopping here on our way from Minnesota to Fargo but we saw the signs. It was well worth the stop! It is still a working mine and there is a lot of history here. The have an area in the visitor center with some displays but the walking tour is the best part. You go at your own pace. It is was very educational.

As a US history teacher, I had wanted to see the mine. There was little in the museum and the attendants not very helpful. I had called fearing that it might not be open on the cold rainy day we were there. I was assured it was open, only to get there and see the door sign saying closed. I telephoned again and found that the sign on the outer door was wrong. The weather prevented our enjoying the site so much as I had hoped. I still treasure the experience as enlightening for me and of potential use in my classroom. There were items outside to explore but the weather precluded our doing that.

From this place much of the iron ore in the United States was found. Pittsburg is famous for steel making but this happened because it was more expensive to ship coal than iron ore. If it were the other way around Hibbing would be world famous for steel making. I couldn't believe the size of this pit! This whole area (the mining towns) are a real experience for a family trip. This is real United States history.

Mine View is a great place to see an actual working mine. From this vantage point, some 100 feet above the active mine, you can see actual mining activities. Bring your binoculars, or use those inside the Mine View building to get an up-close look. Then travel out into the exhibit area to see the actual size of the production trucks. Here you can take your picture inside one of the massive tires, climb into a shovel bucket or take the stairs into a truck that was once used in mine production. Here you get to see what the truck drivers see as they maneuver a truck the size of a house through the mines.Make sure to bring your camera! Plan to spend some time and don't forget to talk with the knowledgeable staff about the workings of the mine, Hibbing Taconite, where the most cost-effective iron ore mining on the iron range is taking place. *my husband recently retired from HT* My 80-year-old uncle was with us for this trip and he thoroughly enjoyed his time. Being a retired farmer, he was impressed with the equipment and had to have his picture taken inside the cab of that production truck. A fond memory for us all!

Most amazing view of an outstanding mine in the history of Minnesota and Hibbing. The mine is actually where the city of Hibbing stood. Hibbing IS the town that moved. Check it out.... so much history there!

Getting to the mine view does not take that much time and is something that is a one time must see when you are in Hibbing. The scale is amazing.

You can stand in awe here. Enjoy the vast surroundings of the active mines around you. Beautiful scenery and it's all free.

Yet another part of Minnesota that I didn't know anything about, even though I am nearly a lifelong citizen of the state! Neat to see the mine still operating and to get to see up close the machines they use, huge isn't even big enough to describe the trucks!

Even if "mining" is not your thing, going to Hull Rust Mahoning Mine View is certainly worth the 5 minute drive if your already in Hibbing. It is incredible to think how big of a mine pit has been dug. The fence is right on the edge of the cliff so you really get a true sense of exactly how big and deep this mine it. It's worth your time.

Not much in the way of signs to tell you what is going on, but it is a great view of the pit. There was a guy inside the gift shop who was able to answer my questions, so I felt like I learned something.

I've taken my g'children here twice and they loved it! Lots of fun, a huge view of the mine, and a great walkway with various pieces of mining equipment and tools. Very educational! They were able to see huge machines actually working, with a gift shop they could browse through! Hope to go back one day!
