This park has been a Family favorite for 50 years now. Just to stand at this overlook and see the surrounding area that General Washington planned his strategy from. Anyone passing through this area on Route 22 should take some time to visit this historic site. More can be found at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/washrock.html.

I live very near to this park and go there often. I take my annual Xmas card picture of my daughter here with view as a back drop. Great place to just sit and take in the view and relax.

what a great day to see beautiful foliage ,from this historical view point. George Washington had the most amazing view and so did we!! The park is small , but the view is awesome!! There are a few picnic tables and a port-o-john, small parking area, and hiking trails all around. You can see from NYC to Atlantic Highlands, to New Brunswick, and beyond, and all points just with your own eyes, bring a pair of binoculars and it is really intense. Enjoy every moment of nature here, Deer also walking around.

Nice place to see on a cool crisp day. You can see the city to the left and the brunswicks on the right.

A historical scenic overlook on the east side of the Watchung mountain range. Not something I would make a special trip for, but a good thing to stop and see if you are in the area.

If you are in the area and the weather is nice it's worth stopping here for the view. Otherwise there isn't much here.

This historic park is a local favorite of ours, mainly for its sweeping views of the surrounding towns and even New York City, if the weather is clear and bright. There is a small parking lot and spots to picnic, and the heavily wooded area gives a bit of tranquility even though it's only a short distance off of Route 22. However the lookout itself is what draws you there. There are a couple of levels to the lookout so you can start at the top and work your way down a little, perch yourself on one of the stone benches and imagine taking a step back in time. They also have some of the automatic binocular (viewing) machines and for a few coins you can see farther away. My only reason for not giving the park a higher rating at this time is that, as another reviewer noted, it needs quite a bit of tlc. The last few times I have visited, there was a lot of trash lying around, graffiti and other paraphernalia. I have a feeling this spot doubles as a nighttime hang out for local teens. Also there are some loose stones here and there so I have to be extra careful when I visit with my daughter, and the bathroom desparately needs to be washed down. This is a state park and an interesting site from a historical perspective and as such, I would love to see it get the care it needs before it becomes too run down to bring back.

If you're interested in history just want to check out a nice view it is worth your while to stop by Washington Rock. There isnt much to do when it comes to trails or picnic areas. It's best to have this just be a short stop along a day of planned activities in the area. There are tons of places to shop in the area or you can drive around behind Washington Rock and see some very large and expensive houses. Occasionally you may run into some teens trying to find a spot to do partake in activities they can't do at home but that has only happened a handful of times during my visits to the area.

NJ has a lot of history and this is just one of the small parks with a great view. Of course, Washington being attached to it makes it a spot for history buffs

First off, let me warn you that the address above is the location of the administrative offices for a number of parks and is nowhere near Washington Rock. I never found a correct street address, but I did find the rock. Finally. It's in Green Brook Township near Dunellen, just off US 22. A turn to the north on Washington Ave. (County Rd. 529) takes you up the mountain to the park. If you're not familiar with NJ, turns are made just prior to the intersection, and at this one we had to go off to the right to make our left. Safer, but very confusing for outsiders. The view from the park was fantastic and the growth that would block it has been kept under control. Thanks, park people. A very informative sign explains why Washington was up there and how the location allowed him to move his troops in 1777, thus saving the Continental Army and quite possibly the Revolution. Try to go on a really clear day since there's a view of New York City that would be quite impressive without the haze that left us seeing shadowy shapes. A quarter in the magnifying viewer gets you about 3 minutes to look around at more detail. A small but adequate parking area is located across the road from the park. Picnic tables are available.

This place is so easy to visit. We used the GPS, and it took us to the road that leads to the viewing area. There's only one main way going there. We could not have gotten lost. At first we drove past it. Then we decided to stop at the parking area, where there seemed to be some information about the park. After we parked the car, we noticed that we were actually facing the rock and the amazing view! XD There were maybe 20 parking spots right across from the rock. The view was great. I can't believe a place like this isn't more popular. There are very little areas of high altitude around Central/South Jersey (at least that I can see). This place is definitely worth visiting: Good view; Easy to find; Quiet; Free parking; No fees; anddd it is where Washington once stood!

Just go there on a clear day. You will just be in awe. George Washington was pretty smart to perch himself here and watch the Red Coats. Of course, the British wearing bright red did help. The view of NYC is just amazing.

Saw plenty of trash on grounds and the out house needs to be emptied sooner. It's not safe for children because there isn't any guard rails and some of the brickwork is loose.

If you are nearby, this is definitely worth a quick trip. Takes about 20 minutes, but the view is exceptional. And interesting historical tidbits.

I took my oldest son here when he was younger, I don't know if he even remembers it, but it has such a great view all the way to New York City. Washington himself stood there and was able to see if ships were coming in from the water over by NY. The decline is protected by a small rock wall and on the other side is a pathway to walk through the woods and encounter many of natures beauty.
