Targhee National Forest is a hidden gem. Located on the west side of Yellowstone National Park, it is less well known and therefore less visited, but has similar landscape, wildlife, and views. Lots of day hiking and overnight trails and a great scenic byway that runs past Mesa Falls.

Trail Creek Campground is about 30 minutes from the center of Jackson Hole, Wyoming off Hwy 22 W just before the Idaho border. It is very wooded and a short distance from Victor, Idaho and Driggs, Idaho. The campground is rather primitive with clean non-flush bathrooms but no showers. We purchased a shower tent with solar bags for water and they worked well. Campfires and pets are allowed and the camp host Reas is very helpful and friendly. He will even deliver the firewood to your site. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, metal box that is chained for storing food so the animals don't get into it. We purchased a Coleman Air Mattress that is guaranteed not to leak which was very comfortable and even had a pillow top that zips off so you don't get cold. You do need an adapter to fill it from your car but it has an electric pump that comes with it. From this location we were able to drive into Jackson Hole, up to Jenny Lake for the day or even drive through Yellowstone and make a circle starting at Jackson Hole, up to Old Faithful over to the West Entrance to the park down the scenic by-way towards Driggs, Idaho past the Mesa Falls. We found the traffic this way to be less and were so surprised by the falls. There is a very reasonable grocery store called Broulim's in Driggs that is a lot less expensive than those in Jackson Hole and they have all the things you need for your campsite. Also there is a laundry in Victor on the right as you enter town coming from Jackson Hole. Also Driggs and Victor have some fun restaurants. Please see the other reviews on them. Jackson Hole does have some great grocery stores like Albertson's, Smith's and the news Jackson Whole Market with many organic options and great coffee. If you want to enjoy the mountains and are on a budget this works well for a change of pace.

Even though the Idaho fires were causing smoke in the sky - we decided to check out the lift and go to the top. We wound up above the smoke line and had incredible views. If you are into BMX - you can ride all the way down. Maybe one day I will. Definately worth the $10.00 (you can get coupons in many locations to reduce the price). When you get down - have a local brew at one of the eateries available.
