What a surprise. Nine-hole golf in Texas has a subculture all of its own, where friendly competition and a well-designed golf course make one heck of a fine day.Our family varies greatly in skill level, from rank beginners to a +4 handicapper. We played a "Texas Scramble" format, where we used two drives from each player. Sonora's course forced our beginners to really focus on fundamentals, but not necessarily distance, so everyone contributed meaningfully to our round. The greens are larger than a typical nine-hole course (and they were really nice bent grass), so putting was a pleasure.Unexpected was a visit by the club pro who came to play a couple holes with us and gave our beginners a few pointers. And another surprise was the variety of birds around the course. We learned of a nearby bird sanctuary and the Sonora area's importance as a migratory route.Nine holes seemed to be the perfect amount of time to stretch our legs, get fresh air and have some fun. Our family very much enjoyed our time together here and we'll do this again on our next trek through Texas.
