My husband and I had the privilege of visiting Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch this past weekend. The ranch is a safe haven and forever home for many species of animals who have come from horrible backgrounds. We saw horses, burros, chimps, pigs, turkeys, cows, camel, & even a tiger living in a humane and enriching environment. I encourage you to visit the Ranch during the open house and experience it yourself.

Love the fund raising dinners at Black Beauty Ranch - Dinner Under the Stars, Dinner in the Barn, etc. A magical place for humans and animals.

I visited Black Beauty ranch as part of a group of volunteers who wanted to help the ranch in any way we could. One group picked up trash up and down the country road leading to the ranch, another did some fence painting, and another moved some furniture. As a thank you for our work, we got a tour. This was back when Black Beauty was still a part of Cleveland Amory's original Fund for Animals and tours weren't held often because it was his belief that animals do not exist for our viewing pleasure, but for their own unique needs and wants. It was beautiful to see so many animals running free in the huge pastures. I believe Black Beauty is now run by the HSUS, and I think they have somewhat more visitors than it did under Fund for Animals. You should call ahead to schedule a visit, or better yet, offer to volunteer!

Absolute must see! However, out of respect for the animals, it is only open to the public twice a year (April and October). Plan ahead if you want to visit. Definitely worth it!

Several of us were at an HSUS conference in Dallas. We knew when the conference ended, we were heading for Murchison. It was a little difficult to find because our group is direction-challenged. But we did find the "burro" sign, and turned in. The ranch volunteers provided a wonderful tour and so many heart-wrenching stories on the tremendous variety of animals now in this ample sanctuary. "Friendly" the burro greeted us. Our hearts went out to the tiger who had been declawed and was now almost lame. Several "Premarin" horses had arrived the day before; one was pregnant - and for the first time in her life would get to love her baby. The horses were so traumatized.....they had never been free to roam. Giraffes, elephants, and many animals we had never before seen. To experience Cleveland Amory's dream turned into our dream. One of our FOLBA volunteers fantasized about moving to Murchison to help these animals. This is a fabulous sanctuary - a "must see" for anyone in the Dallas/Murchison area. Phone first for the hours.
