The Majors-Parchman House is a restored early Texas farmhouse in the late "Victorian Cottage" style, located on Kaufman Street, south of the courthouse square area. Believed to have been built about 1886, the home went though many changes and additions before being restored in the late 1990's. Today the home has been furnished with period antiques and accessories and exhibits a number of paintings by local artists, dating from the late 1800's to the 1940's. My favorite item was the Joshua Johnson desk in the parlor, which looks like a chest of drawers before converting into a writing desk. The grounds include other historic buildings, including a smokehouse, hen-house, and small barn. A nice example of an early Texas home from the late 1800's. One of the two historic homes in Mount Vernon available for public tours [the other is the Henry Clay Thruston House]. Best to call in advance for tour information [903-537-4760].
