This is one of those things you would miss if you aren't looking for something to do, but that said, it's an amazing small-town museum. I work just a block away and if you are in Dalhart for a night and have sometime, this is my first suggestion. The exhibits are very well done. Some smaller museums tend be be filled with flee market quality items, not the case here. Every items is unique and well presented and documented. They have era and themed exhibits. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. I'm very proud of what they've done there and recommend it to anyone as a great way to get insight into the history and culture of the panhandle region. Don't Miss It!!!

This is one of the best museums in the country. If you are interested in the High Plains of Texas this is a must see.

This is the best museum and gives you a real picture of life in the Panhandle. So many great exhibits for such a small town!

It's hard to say properly what a great place this museum really is, Even though I got there on a Sunday afternoon I felt at home immediately due to the pleasant greetings from the 2 curators, who obviously enjoy their mission.I could go on at length about the in-depth displays of ranch/cowboy items, all well noted and described as to purpose, usage & derivation. The enormous stuffed mountain lion will give you pause since you can practically tough him through the glass case!I left with several obscure questions answered as well as some difficult to find books for reference material.I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time here!

Be sure and stop in as you stay in or pass through Dalhart. If you want to know anything about the Texas panhandle, dust bowl or the XIT ranch this is the place to come. It is much larger than it looks and will take you between 60-90 mins to see and experience the whole thing. Definitely worth a stop.

Really enjoyed this museum. It is larger than it appears on the outside and I learned a lot about Texas history that I didn't know. Museum is free but donations are appreciated. Would highly recommend if you like museums

My only regret was that we did not have an entire day to tour this museum. It is much bigger than we expected and every exhibit was carefully done to perfection. Make sure you reserve at least a half day for touring this museum.

XIT museum is not just about the huge ranch. It offers a room with a natural history diorama. The artifacts of the period added to the museum. I truly enjoyed the time I spent.

XIT was a huge ranch, spanning parts of 10 counties in the panhandle. It was created during the start of Texas as a method to sell land to finance construction of the capital. The museum contains several period rooms, exhibits on ranching and farming, and extensive photographic and document archives covering the history of Dalham and Hartley counties.
