Fort Myer is home to the Old Guard and provides the escort for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The post is adjacent to the Arlington National Cemetery and has two chapels which are often used for military funerals. The post is also home to the U.S. Army Band.

One of the nicest, cleanest, safest Army military installations in the world. Just recently, now a Joint Base with nearby USMC-Henderson Hall. If you are retired military and/or have authorization to access military installations, you MUST visit Ft. Myer and experience a First Class shopping experience at the well-stocked Commissary and a newly renovated Post Exchange. AAFES also operates a Class VI (shoppette-style store with beer, wine, distilled spirits and convenient food), a Cleaners, Flower Shop, Barber, Subway and a Gas Station and Full Service Car Care Facility. As mentioned, USMC-Henderson Hall connects to Ft. Myer and the USMC's offer the finest Base Exchange in the world with the best stocked BX anywhere. If you haven't shopped these bases recently, please take the effort to do so. You will be pleasantly surprised with the significant savings and stock assortments.

If in the DC area and you want to see some US Army history this is a good location. Adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and home to the US Army Honor Guard known as the Old Guard of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. This unit is the one that Guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington and provides the Caisson and Horse's for all US Presidential funerals, conducts US military funerals in Arlington, Fife and Drum Corp and other bands. This is a very old Army Post. This is the home of the Old Guard. It is a beautiful post to visit. Many of the funerals for those buried in Arlington are conducted at the Chapel on Ft. Myer. You need a military ID to enter.

My son & his family have access to Ft Myer & we went to mass at the base chapel. Standard base amenities, commissary included.

We went to see the base where my Grandson is stationed, as an Honor Guard. The housing for the officers and the buildings, in general, are very representative of Old Virginia architecture. Lots of charm and greenery. Don't miss seeing the horses and stables at the Caisson Platoon.

Went to an army review at Conmy Hall and had lunch with the troops for an army reunion. I was stationed here over 40 years ago and the place still has memories and charm.

We were there to see a nephew honored. Before 9-11 you could take a shortcut through the base now you are stopped. Asked to step out of the car, hood up, trunk up etc. while being surveilled by armed gaurds. After showing proof of invitation and ID we were permitted to pass. A behind the scene look at young men and woman who do so much. Thank you for your service.

I live here. There is no more honorable funeral than one at Arlington. worth watching if not in the family. Reverent place. JFL eternal flame memorial is heart touching. View of DC super. Robt E Lee's Custis-Lee mansion or Arlington House is definitely worth a visit. Docents are excellent. Property descended from G Washington. Lee was conflicted having trained at West Point but finally chose to fight for VA. Gen Meigs confiscated and decimated his property. Over simplification but interesting to learn the whole truth.

Were there for a brunch after a memorial service at Arlington. Difficult to get around once inside. Need to follow the signs very closely.

You won't find a stop here in most tour guides, but it's worth a quick trip through just to drink in the feeling of history captured in old, graceful buildings and tree-lined streets. Some buildings survive from the Civil War era. Summertime offers more activities such as the sunset tattoos. To visit, you'll need a valid drivers license (or official Department of Defense photo ID). My partner and I have been to Fort Myer Bowling Center a few times for bowling, and overall just a very fun way to spend an afternoon. For bowling prices in the area, you can't beat here. On some weekday nights when there aren't bowling leagues, you can get games for $.50 each. I will say that the facilities are dated compared to anything new. You're definitely bowling as people did when it was built in the 1970s! The food is standard, and just typical ballgame food, etc.I always see family here, and this is definitely a good activity for families.Definitely recommend Fort Myer Bowling Center.

The installation itself has very little tourist value [outside, perhaps, of its newly renovated, but historic old post chapel]. During the summer months, however, it becomes the venue for the occasional sunset tattos -- historical and musical performances by the US Army Band and the troops of the 3d US Infantry known as the "Old Guard".

Sentinels maintain a 24 hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Old Guard is the Army’s premiere ceremonial unit and escort to the President of the United States. The Caisson Barn is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm. A member of the Old Guard will show the horses which are black and grey. Tours of the Tack Rooms, Farrier Room, and Caisson Room are well worth your time. Black Jack was the riderless horse at the funerals of Presidents Kennedy, Eisenhower, and Hoover. Black Jack is buried on Summerall Field.This is a great experience for both adults and children. It is off the beaten path, but so well worth a visit.

My son is in The Old Guard, public affairs, so we took a ride through Ft. Myer, he showed us some of the General's homes and other buildings, it is quite small compared to most army bases, but more attractive than most, with nice grounds, and of course being directly adjacent to Arlington Nati'l Cemetery is awesome. We also got to see the Twilight Tattoo, amazing show on every Wednesday evening in the summer, with the fife and drum corps, Army band, singers and actors portraying significant events in the history of the Army. Unfortunately it got rained out so we did not get to see the rifle team do their drill.
