wade's mill

This was one of the last spots to visit on our way to NC. Neat little mill and have always loved the smell of the mill. The owner doesn't mill when the store is open due to dust in the store so we didn't get to see it operating. The owner was nice and let us look around as he walked back into his house which was odd. If you like locally ground flours and corn meals in an old historic mill then it might be a nice visit. I purchased some of the maple syrup farmed in Virginia which was odd because I never heard of it being produced this far south. Over all an average stop but nothing special.

Wades Mill is our go-to place in VA for flour and grits, as well as hard to find kitchen items. We always visit during their October Apple Butter Festival to hear the bluegrass music as well as sample local cheeses, wine from Rockbridge Winery, stone oven baked bread, maple syurp, and many other locally made goods including blacksmith wares and handmade tables/chairs/benches. If you can't make it to this active grist mill, they can ship their products to you via thier web site. But it is worth the drive and the experience if you can get there.

We really enjoyed walking around the Mill, taking pictures, and then touring inside. I even got to take a photo of a bag of grain being lifted up through the door at the top of the Mill - just like they used to do it in the old days! We took home a bag of Cornbread Mix ground right there and enjoyed talking to the Mill owner. Worth a trip down a winding Virginia road with beautiful scenery all around!

Wade's Mill is an amazing place. There aren't too many grist mills still in operation, so going out of your way to visit this one is well worth your time.In the four or five times I've visited the mill, they've only been grinding grain once. But that apparent lack of activity doesn't keep the store shelves from being fully stocked. Wade's Mill has every kind of flour and meal you could ever want.Our favorite is the freshly ground corn meal. It makes cornbread unlike any you've ever had from store bought corn meal.Be sure to store all of your flour and meal in the freezer because it will go rancid in a short time otherwise.
