Site of the founding of the State of Mississippi and where Jefferson Davis attended for one semester, this now-closed preparatory school provides a glimpse into the past. Unfortunately, almost nothing in the first building has been restored and the other two buildings are still closed. The museum is of moderate interest. It was not the highlight of our trip to Natchez, and I cannot highly recommend it, until more of it has been restored.

Just plain interesting how things were done without any "extras" yet must have been an elite experience.

While visiting Natchez we drove out here one afternoon because it was listed as a must see on the Natchez Trace ( just a short ways off). The history of the school was very interesting and the fact that it was started in the early 1800's and did not close until 1964 adds to its long history

I stopped here on a trip to Natchez, largely because I just wanted to see the village that has been the first territorial capital of the old Mississippi Territory. Although nothing of the latter remains, the old College that was built when Washington was the territorial capital is still standing and in surprisingly good condition. There is a visitor center with nice exhibits, an open walk through the grounds and access to a typical building, and even two nature trails. And I learned something I had not realized: it was nearby that Aaron Burr was captured by federal troops, as he tried to escape his charge of conspiracy -- for no one knew what. Worth a stop if passing by.

First territorial capitol of Mississippi Territory, and site of filming of Horse Soldiers { John Wayne) and annual Copper Magnolia festival. Military college at one time.

There is a lot of history at this place. It was very interesting to see this college. I remember in high school studying about this college was great to actually go see it

The reception building has a small exhibit about the years it was a military school. One of the two school/dormitory buildings is open to see the ground floor. Walking trough that building you see the kitchen building and the kind of plaza where they filmed for the TV series North and South. Don't forget to walk the nature trail and see the two graves of the men that died here. The old buildings are currently being restored and we would love to go visit it again when the restorations are finished. The college is surrounded by big, beautiful trees which make the place a peaceful area to walk in.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Jefferson College. We learned a few things about Natchez and the history of the college. A part of the mini series North and South was filmed there. Very interesting history and so educational.

On our way to Natchez from Vicksburg we stumbled across Jefferson College which is only 1 block off the highway. The grounds are beautiful and the history of this site is impressive. It's worth the stop.

We got there to late to go inside, however the ground and view from outside were very impressive, so make the time to drive over to the location for sure.

Mississippi became a state in the "front yard" of Jefferson College. Wish we could have gone inside each of the buildings, but I understand restoration is ongoing. Free admission -- great for groups.

Awesome place to visit, it's an old collage and it was used in THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH as WEST POINT. If you come to town you need to see this

Visited during a special event with reenactors, period sutlers, lectures and tours of the facility. It was very educational and fun to visit and see the demonstrations. Jefferson College any time of the year is a step back into history especially for those who follow military history.

It is very interesting to see this old school and grounds. Have to say though that I went because of seeing it on The North and The South. It is The movie set for West Point for George and Ory.

Beautiful old college. Nice little museum in the Admin building. Plus, John Wayne filmed part of The Horse Soldier here.
