We will agree with Don; it is dirty! Not much more did I expect though because of previous experiences in bargain stores. Still they could have provided a clean restroom. I couldn't use it unfortunately. You spend so much time in there hunting for goodies, it's the least they can provide. Anyway we did find a few things and with some much appreciated help from a veteran shopper that I engaged conversation with over her strategy when shopping at Don's. Overall, if you can remember to go before you shop and you watch those expiration dates then you could get some very nice deals. Of course it is dependent too on what they have and what your likes are. While shopping the other afternoon I received from my daughter. She said she had never heard of Dirty Don's so maybe it's a well kept secret. Anyway, I told her that next time she was in town (she used to live in KCMO) I would take her (without the kids). I don't recommend taking children, the reason is that there are so many things in there and yes, some are chemicals. I wouldn't trust a child to understand to stay away from certain things.

Be prepared to enter a hodge podge of everything, food displayed in boxes and will have an outdated expiration date, we might be in Thanksgiving season, but they still have Valentine candy. Other items you may or may not find, dishes, clothes, furniture, paper items, etc....This is a one of a kind store.

This place has a large variety of food items, condoments, frozen meats, canned fruit and vegatables all at bargain prices.

I've been shopping at Dirty Dons for more than 25 years, since back when it was in the small basement across the street from its current location. This is truly a have-what-they-have-when-they-have-it kind of store. I was once standing behind a customer who was asking an employee when something would be ‘back in stock’ and I felt like interjecting “the next time a truck carrying that crashes!” Of course, the employee was a little more diplomatic, but basically said the same thing. I try to shop at Don’s about weekly and there may be spans of months when it's not very exciting and all you find is pretty much garbage. I've also bought food that I later discovered was infested with bugs (and they're loathe to give refunds, so let the buyer beware!). Let there be no doubt that the place lives up to its name. But then again, you might get there right after the quarterly gourmet truck shows up and they've got awesome food bargains or other treasures at a fraction of their normal price. What keeps me coming back is that shopping there is an adventure - you never know what you'll find. Food, frozen food, lots of imported cheeses, pet food and supplies, cut flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, office and cleaning supplies, clothing, yard ornaments, hardware and tools, books and magazines, DVDs, photo paper, and electronics are all things I've purchased there over the years. Lately it seems like they more frequently have ethnic-type foods including Hispanic, various Asian varieties, and Hebrew foods, which can give you a chance to try less familiar things with little risk and at a low cost. And believe it or not, not everything they sell has expired or is about to! By the way, Don’s has made many major upgrades over the years – they’ve paved the parking lot, fixed the badly-leaking roof, and added air conditioning to the main warehouse area. There’s a bigger and better known local business of this type on 23rd Street in Independence, but I believe Dirty Don’s has better prices and is usually more likely to have things I want. But if food and merchandise which fell off a truck or was wrested from the twisted wreckage of mangled trains isn't your cup of tea, maybe you should steer clear of the Don of Dirt. That will just leave more for me to pick through.….
