The theater exist as a nonprofit organization that thrives in a downtown community because some folks had the wisdom to retain the theater as an entertainment not just for movies but to use it for other entertainment venues. Those who speak of preserving such building need to give full support both financially and volunteering. I am not a member of that community and I intentional go there to experience the grand art deco of the theater and sit in the largeness and enjoy music, movies, and other types of presentation. The support of Dickinson College to use the theater give various presentation demonstrate how all the various community groups can collaborate and bring audiences to the theater. Hey,lets get out of those mega theater black boxes and enjoy a grand theater, what more can be sad beyond thank you to all who make this happen.

Very atmospheric, old worldy theatre that shows films and also has live music acts. Should be preserved and supported at all costs as there are fewer and fewer of these little gems left.

this theater is special, a complete rebuild after a fire next door, makes this 1930's style art deco looking theater is a joy alone , but when the lights come down the sound is perfection, recently they are having a fund raiser to raise the money necessary to convert to digitatal projectors, the popcorn use to e stale, and the balcony is again closed, if you want to see it come on Sunday morning at 9am when the homeless enjoy a free breakfast, the churchers always love to show off the whole theater

The Carlisle Theatre could have been an empty shell, a blight on Carlisle's downtown. Its prior owners built a modern, multi-screen, movie house at a local shopping center and left the downtown building to rot. Thanks to the foresight and energy of a determined group of community volunteers, the Carlisle Theatre is returning to its previous glory. They worked hard to raise funds to refurbish the theatre and used their own time and energy doing much of the labor necessary to move the building to its fullest potential. The building is warm, clean, and comfortable and the roof no longer leaks. This is an ongoing project. Every year the theatre gets better and better.Improving the facility is one focus of the community group that operates the theatre. All of that would be of no real value without programming. Every year the Carlisle Theatre offers a varied schedule of events to entertain the community. Drama, comedy, music, and more. All of that is presented on the theatre's stage. Now, that mall cinema screens the most popular films, but they don't necessarily show critically acclaimed movies that might attract a smaller audience. The Carlisle Theatre comes to the rescue showing quality films that might not be otherwise available to this community. Ticket price? Always less than you would pay elsewhere. The Carlisle Theatre offers good films, excellent live entertainment, and is available for use by various community groups. So, why only four "stars"? Because there is the potential to make the Theatre even better. That potential will be realized. The Carlisle Theatre is an asset the community.

We attended a special Save the Carlisle Theatre activity. This event was very well organized with a "meet and greet" with good snacks, a movie, and a question and answer period at the end. The new speaker system does need some adjustments. It could have been a little louder and clearer. The Theatre deserves to be able to continue; it is so beautiful.

The theater is both a movie theater and a performing arts theater. Situated smack dab in the heart of Carlisle, this little gem is as pretty inside as the outside old art deco style marquee is handsome. The theater hosts not only performers like George Winston at Christmastime and Barleyjuice for St. Pattys', it also plays host to local theater presentations like Chicago and Beauty and the Beast and to the more art-type movies that don't make it into the local Regal movie theater. They also will rent out to events- can you imagine a themed wedding here?Truly one of the stand out wonderful things about Carlisle!

love seeing movies in this theatre! it just feels like a special place - comfy seats, great concession stand, lovely decor - it feels like stepping back in time; and the movie offerings are usually artsy, which aren't always offered in the mainstream theatres

Been there while visiting a friend's friend. Had something bite to eat nearby. There are quite number eateries around. The theatre building is also good and renovated nicely. We watched an independent film which we heard is very typical for here. However as many say in here the sound quality was really not good.

We are regular customers to this theater which we love and happens to be three blocks from where we live. We also appreciate and enjoy the selection of movies. But as others have mentioned, the sound is a huge problem. And they know it. But money is an enormous consideration. And now they face the fact that in a short time, films will be available only in digital form - something the theater is not prepared for. If the Carlisle is able to gather enough money to make the transition to digital, the sound problems will also be addressed and we'll finally have the perfect movie venue. As for the live performances, we went to one country rock concert and the sound, in this case, provided by the band, was so strident and loud, that we have never risked a return.

Nice older theater in town. Usually plays foreign films and limited times. In downtown with cute places to eat nearby. Not a Cineplex venue but nice for a change on a rainy day in Carlisle.

It's great to have a small town movie house showing independent films in the neighborhood. We go, though, mostly to see foreign films where we can read the subtitles because the acoustics are flat out bad. This summer we went to a live performance of a play and could barely understand what the cast was saying. At the recommendation of another patron, we've tried sitting in the balcony. The sound there is a little better--at least we got the general gist of the movie. The theatre is a historical gem, but the acoustics need some polishing.

We attended the free Sousa Concert and thoroughly enjoyed it. Love old theaters and we definitely plan on going back for a future performance. The acoustics are excellent.

I pay $6 as a senior to see a movie at the Carlisle Theatre that is 5 minutes from my house. The movies arrive a month or more after playing at other theaters. The sound quality for movies varies. On 7/13/2012 I and everyone else could not understand what the actors said in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." On 7/20/2012 the sound was good for "First Position." I typically drive 30 minutes to Cinema Center of Camp Hill to see movies when they are first released, although the sound is too loud at the Cinema Center of Camp Hill. In May I saw "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" at the Cinema Center of Camp Hill and understood what the actors said.
