Our group of 7 friends went and spent a weekend on the Allegheny. The outfitter made the trip very easy, we parked our cars at the livery for the weekend. They took us, all of our gear, and the rented boats up to the put-in and then picked us up down river the next day. The shuttle was included in the very reasonable price of the canoe rental. If you bring your own boats, they can do just the shuttle for you as well.

For a family reunion over the 4th of July week a large group of us made reservations to go Canoeing down the Allegheny River. What an experience. You park and they drove our group - 16 of us - up to the Dam and helped get us started. We had 7 Canoes and 1 kayak with my daughter being a third person in our canoe. The trip was very leisurely and you could go your own pace and there were tons of little islands and places to stop and everywhere there were people to visit and talk with. We had planned ahead and each canoe had snacks and beverages and we would link up and share what we brought. We all stopped on a island and even had a nice little picnic. The entire trip was just memorable.

We have taken many trips down the Allegheny River with this outfitter. They have a great knowledge of the region and are very friendly and accommodating!. We have rented kayaks, canoes and even had then transport our kayaks for a nominal fee. There are great places on the run from the Kinzua Dam to AO to stop and have a picnic lunch on one of the islands. Water is calm and great for families. Recently my girlfriends took the Women on the Water run on a Sunday which was a great way to relax and getaway.

We rented canoes and took the 7 mile trip down river. The canoes were surprisingly very comfortable and easily accommodated 2 people plus coolers and fishing equipment. While walk-ins are welcome, we made reservations in advance (3 canoes; 6 people) which turned out to be beneficial as there was not a single boat left to be rented upon our return in mid-afternoon. The water was calm and shallow with many places to stop for a dip in the water. The staff was very friendly and helpful with questions for us first-timers. Only negative points: 1. Even though we had reservations, we still had to wait approx. 30 minutes for a van to return so that our canoes could be loaded and we could be taken to our starting point. 2. Upon our return, the beach was crowded with little room to dock our canoes and there were no employees in sight to assist. In order to make room for canoes waiting in the water, we had to carry our canoes out of the water and up a fairly steep and washed-out incline to a storage area. (Easy enough for strong men but not for women or elderly.) Once we reached the top of the incline, we found 2 employees (both approx. 14-15 years old) sitting on lawn chairs watching the chaos without offering to assist or provide instructions. All in all though, we really enjoyed the trip and will definitely go again.

Allegheny Outfitters (sister livery: Indian Waters) is located in the Allegheny national recreation area, which is an absolutely beautiful region. AO has canoe trips on the Allegheny River and satellite creeks for varying distances and stretches of the river, including routes that allow on-island camping. AO leads the pack in being a responsible business owner by promoting conservation and leading clean-up projects and leave-no-trace clinics throughout the year. The fruits of this labor mean beautiful canoe adventures for you at a really competitive price. Canoe rentals generally include transport to your car (or dropoff upriver at the start of the route), and their employees are friendly and professional. My family and I have rented from this business for 20+ years, and as many of us have moved away from the area, we continue to return here anyway despite the distance. Rentals are priced right so there's never a good reason not to return. Last year we even saw a bald eagle!
