My friend and her 2 daughters, 13, were in from sunny California, and I called this, PATTY'S SURPRISE! They were surprised alright! LOL You are given a short class room instruction on the types of coal, and history of coal mining in our area. Interesting. Then it's off to the mine car and into the tunnel which is 1/2 mile into the mountain, it is inspected every day by, JOHN, who was a miner and really knowledgable. He provided current information about our government and how they was to decrease coal mining which will result in rolling black outs in the very near future. I highly recommend this for adults and children. It's an eye/mind opening experience.

The tour is a 90 minute experience, mostly underground in the mine. It's led by experienced coal miners, who are full of information and passion for the history of this mine. Out of the ordinary and so much fun. Be sure to bring a jacket. I wore a heavy hoodie and I was COLD!

This is a very cool place to visit. I have been there three times and it is great. The tour-ed mine is an old, out of commission real coal mine. There is a tour and an educational session conducted by real old coal miners who are bright, enthusiastic and have great stories. You start in an old store that is a little museum and then they give you a short lecture. Then the cool part starts. You actually take a real coal train into this old mine. And go for a tour there. It is a bit scary but absolutely fascinating.I recommend you call ahead for reservations in case they have a big group coming through

This is a terrific place to take and group of kids - scouts, school or church groups. Everyone - adults included - learned so much about mining and its importance to the Pittsburgh region. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to do something local but out of the ordinary.

We visited the mine a few years ago (not March 2013). My kids loved every minute of it. Riding the coal train. Climbing on the equipment. Exploring the antiques in the main visitor's area. Would recommend for everyone, young and old alike.

Must be the fourth or fifth time visiting this dynamic spot! Cannot think of a better way to present how difficult and dangerous it is for so many in the past and right now to make a living and to provide us with something we take for granted. Electricity!

Took our 4 kids today to see how it is when daddy goes to work (late version of course) but our experience was great. Nice men and educational. I would recommend going to anyone!!

This is a very poor "haunted" experience. Not worth wasting the time or money. If you are going to make a trip somewhere for a fun night of scare - this is not the place to be. A date took me there - he is no longer around - wonder why

We live within 7 miles of Tour-Ed but have never taken a tour. We were very surprised at the quality and attention to detail for our entire experience. The owners are very nice people and they both present the tour with complimentary information. There is a museum with antiques and mining equipment where the tour starts. You hear stories about how the early mining companies manipulated the miners and their families so that the miners were barely more than indentured servants. There are many artifacts such as would be found in a company store. The second part of the tour is called "mining school". The other owner who is a retired mining safety inspector takes you into a classroom where you learn about mining hazards, safety and rescue, all with demonstrations of actual equipment. It was much more interesting than I am describing it.The last part of the tour is in the mine. Everyone wears a mining helmet and climbs into the narrow and low mining personnel carriers. The owner then drives the vehicle about 1/4 mile into the mine where there are several pieces of functional mining equipment showing different methods of coal extraction over the past 200 years. All the equipment is demonstrated in working condition and I found the time passed very quickly, there was so much to see. Finally we rode back to the surface on the same personnel carriers with a new appreciation for those who work in deep mines.Prices were reasonable, we paid about $8 per person. There is a discount for children. The children in our party under the age of 8 were not as interested in some of the parts of the tour, finding it boring, but the 10yo and up were as fascinated as the adults. The mine is only open in the summer months except by special arrangement. Film crews have used the mine for "My Bloody Valentine" and the Que Creek documentary. Scout groups and field trips also are welcome at any time with prior arrangement. The mine is not accessible for those guests in a wheelchair. This is due to the nature of the attraction.

We learned about this tour from Trip Advisor and I am glad we stopped. Very interesting....learned a lot. The tour guides are great and it is very reasonable.

We visited the Tour Ed Mine in June 2012. We enjoyed every bit of this attraction. The tour starts in the replica company store with a discussion of miners' lives back in the 19th century. From there, after an initial discussion about the mine, we went into the mine via an authentic mine car. The in-mine part of the tour involves going to different sections of the mine, which contain working antique mine equipment from different eras. The tour guide was a certified mine safety engineer with several years experience. We enjoyed the entire tour. The best part of the tour was the people who run the tour. They were both excellent. We will come back again if we are ever in the area again.
