We have, over the years, camped in many state parks throughout the US. Raccoon Creek was excellent! The campsite was spacious and clean. The bathrooms were clean and well heated including the showers. The park itself had plenty to do with the beach, fishing, boat rental, hiking and even a small playground. The hiking trails were easy to follow and marked easy or more difficult by color. Walking through the wild flower area is a nice hike. We took a side hike to the cemetery, as was suggested by the park office staff. We all loved the newly cleaned up area that made you wonder how the settlers made it through life in the remote area. Pittsburg was a short enough drive but we didn't leave the park! It's a shame this was the last camping weekend of the season. Keep it in mind come Spring. You won't regret it.

This campground is great. The sites are large, surrounded by trees, spaced a good distance apart, and equipped with fire ring and picnic table. We loved it! The bathhouse was very clean, heated, and had good hot showers. My only complaint is that there is not water hook up at your site. No water spigot. So you have to unhook and go to a spigot and fill up. That was annoying. Another small annoyance was that the campground is under the approach route to the pittsburgh airport. So the roar from low approach and departure of planes is fairly constant. They were flying so low overhead that I could identify the airline of each plane. Otherwise, we loved our stay there and will stay again despite the air traffic and water issue.

We visited here on our way back to Wisconsin from Deep Creek Lake, Maryland and walked the trail up towards the waterfall at Frankfort Mineral Springs. Our 2 year,Snow Lab, loved this spot. The kids (12,15 and 17) enjoyed the walk through the wooded area. Nice area that was well taken care of.

We stayed here for just one night. Despite being just 1/2 hour or so from Pittsburgh, there is really nothing nearby. This was our last stop on a week long camping trip. The camp sites were spacious and grassy, which made tent camping very nice. We chose a non-electric site, which might have been a good choice for tent camping. The bathrooms were okay. Only 2 showers and it was very rustic. But everything was clean and functional. There is a big lake which is where the store is. It's a bit of a drive to get to the store, and they only have the basics: firewood, ice, boat rentals. We drove to a convenience store for more food supplies, but they didn't have much. I'd recommend bringing groceries in, if you're going to go. I wandered down a couple of trails from the campground in the morning. They were very nice. Many of the trails are longer and suitable for backpacking. If that's what you're into, this seems like a good place for it.One downside was that the camp is in the flight path for the airport. During the day at least, planes flew overhead quite close. So that was kind of distracting. If I lived closer, I might go back, but I'm not sure I'd make the long trip for this place.

We've gone to the beach at Raccoon Creek State Park a couple times this summer and it's a favorite. We've always gone on weekdays and there are people but it hasn't been crowded. There's a large grassy area and then a smaller sand area. The swimming area is roped off up to about 5 feet deep. Many families bring sand and water toys, blow up rafts, etc... Very family friendly. There is a bath house there with toilets, showers, and changing rooms. There is also a refreshment stand that sells food and icecream. We've only gotten the icecream cones...they were $3 and good hand dipped icecream. It's a great free activity.

Made a last minute reservation for a holiday weekend and landed at site E-12. Overall, the E-Loop was nice (we marked E-6 and E-30 as our favorites). All the sites are relatively close to the bathroom, and the noise was minimal. I liked the side of the street we were on since there were woods behind us, giving us some privacy. The sites can be small - our was ok - but much of it was unusable due to uneven ground. It is true there are some planes landing at the nearby airport, but we hardly noticed them. The campground is convenient to the beach and boat rental - about a 10 minute drive. The staff was ok...not the most friendly crew, but got the job done. The campground does not sell firewood...you must go to the boat rental house to get $5.00 nasty wood. The second day we went out to Route 30 and found a place (Red Roof House) that sold us a wheelbarrow full for $10 - burned very well!Overall, it was a good camping trip...we will have more selection on a non-holiday weekend, but even in the crowded park, we didn't feel crowded. Lots of hiking, swimming, boating, etc. available. Would definitely go again to this park armed with new knowledge to make the trip even better.

Its a beautiful state park, so close to Pittsburgh. I love camping and we capped here for two nights. Some amazing trails to go around and beautiful lake for fishing and swimming.

Visited after Christmas to get off the couch and into some fresh air. It was great! We put together part of the forest trail with the lake trail to make a nice loop probably around 4 miles. Also checked out the mineral spring. Trails were very well marked. Only negative was that hunting is allowed, so the lady in the office said we should wear bright colors. We saw a few hunters while driving, but none on our hike. Perfect hike for what we were looking for!

We stayed here two nights in August of 2013. We were visiting Pittsburgh and uses this campground as a base camp. We did not explore the state park at all, but it seemed nice. It takes about an hour to get into Pittsburgh from here which includes traffic and the tunnel. But for the price, it is hard to beat.

Went to the park 3 weeks ago, the state stocking trout, rainbows. Great place to walk dogs, rent a boat for the lake, nice jogging trails. The park in kept very clean and cabins to rent. Rangers very helpful

Average park nothing spectacular, very spread out, modern cabins are very clean, beds are hard, kitchen is very adequate. Playground is in poor condition, Very little to do for kids, If you like planes this is a perfect park for you because commercial jets are just flying right about you all day (about every 5 mins) and some at night you can almost see the people on the planes. This park is right on the landing flight path for Pittsburgh International Airport. Groceries are about 15 mins away, We found grocery prices similar to Canadian prices.(Not Cheap). firewood can be bought at the boat launch ($5 a bundle). Beach is nice, the wildflower reserve has a beautiful education center. The highlight was probably the natural mineral spring. Be prepared to drive anywhere in the park, everything is so far apart. We have been camping for many years in tents, trailers and cabins, and can probably say that we would not return to this park.

We just spent 2 nights camping in the D Loop at Raccoon Creek State Park. There's a few things you should know before you go. Come prepared! There is NO WHERE within a 30 minute drive of the campground to get gas, ice, or firewood. And there is no place to get all 3 at once! No one was working at the campground entrance the entire time we were there, and the Park Office does not have gas or wood. Luckily, we had an ax and chopped our own wood from downed trees, but otherwise we would have been out of luck. There is also ONE dumpster (that we could find) at the campground entrance. Since the raccoons are rampant your choice is to put your trash in your car, or spend 10-15 minutes driving it to the front of the campground. There were a few different people in State Park trucks that drove around the loop ridiculously fast, and never once did they wave, roll down their window, or ask how we were. Even after a night of torrential rain, thunder, and lightening they just sped by without checking in. We were there during the week and there were mostly empty sites, but also know that almost all of them have a significant slope to them - especially in Loops B and C - I'm not sure where you would even put a tent in these sites. Is it a peaceful, remote place with a decent beach - yes. But while those are things we usually look for in campgrounds, it's not one we're likely to return to. We are not "luxury" campers by any stretch of the imagination, but this place made camping with 3 little girls just a little too challenging.

A lake for fishing, not many fish. Walking trails for spring & fall exercise. Not worth traveling out of your way.

We made a last-minute decision on a Saturday morning to camp here on Saturday night. We arrived without a reservation but our preferred site was available when we arrived. The park staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Our site was wooded, and had a fair amount of isolation from neighboring sites. We did not have occasion to utilize the bathrooms or showers as we stayed in a trailer. The beach was busy with temps in the upper eighties and high humidity, but we didn't have any problem finding space. The water temp refreshing, but not cold. The further out towards the far buoy line we swam, it was less crowded, but the bottom was mostly mud as opposed to sand. This was our third time in as many summers staying here. We had previously noticed frequent air traffic but didn't view it as overly disruptive, and didn't prevent us from coming back. This time the traffic was very light. We will go back here.

Called in advance to find out more about campsites - rustic and campground . Woman at park not so helpful. I had to pull info out of her. Looking for quiet site. She suggested C3 bc one side surrounded by woods. Nice site but adjacent to c2, lucky no one camped there bc so close. But could work for 2 families. C3 at bend, since camp busy - we had constant traffic by our site. At night, lots of headlights. Quiet time was supposed to be from 10 am to morning . Many loud radios and dogs barking. Pittsburgh international must have might flight pattern over park. Around 2 am i thought 747 was landing on out tent! Not so peaceful. Beach was extremely crowded. Positives: hike the short mineral springs loop. You will be rewarded w a lush grotto at the cool springs. Check out Larry's boat rentals. Kayaks. Hydrobikes. Electric motorboats. Prices reasonable. Larry is a character. He gave us some good warnings about keeping all food in car - windows up. Otherwise we would have woke up to raccoon bandits in car . Bought some firewood at Larry's . Would only go back to do backpack -in camping.
