Ski Liberty has a very experienced staff of ski and snowboard instructors. There is always plenty of staff on hand who are very helpful and patient. The resort is very nice with shuttle buses available for the parking lots, lots of security and helpful staff. The food and drinks are very expensive so bring your own. You can bring coolers and there is plenty of places to store all of your stuff. Overall a very good value and lots of fun.

Went to Liberty for first time, pre-school daughter in tow, for skiing. Stayed for a weekend. Each day got better. The army of staff people to help sign up for lessons, rent equipment, teach and take care of our kid in the children's center were outstanding. Not a hitch. Little one learned to ski and liked it. So we're going back. Wish they had a smoothie bar, though. It would be a nice alternative at breakfast. Or alternative to pork. Next trip I'm bringing a blender.

It's not a huge resort, but given that it's only an hour and 30 minutes or so from DC, it works perfectly for a day out. The slopes are really good for beginners. It can get a little dull for intermediates toward the end of the day. The lifts are not super fast, but they do keep the lines moving fairly well. The rental line moved pretty well, although getting the skis and having to have them write down the ski number, etc. on paper seems a little odd and a waste of paper and time. I have always found the lift staff to be very nice and quick to react when problems arise. The slopes were not too crowded, even though it was a weekend, but it might have been because of the lateness of the season. We did really enjoy the hysterical Pond Skimming event and people must plan for it all season, because there were plenty of costumes and gags for the contest. It was fun to take a break from skiing and watch the brave, crazy people trying to ski across the pond. A good day outing from DC and we recommend it.

Like any amusement area the prices are SKY high and the food of course is poor. Water is like $3.50 a bottle. You eat there out of convenience only. Even the hot chocolate was awful.THE HOT CHOCOLATE.! At a ski resort. I guess I could have gotten it from the Starbucks in the building. May cost $6 or something but it may have tasted better.

This was my second visit here and I feel that their ski classes are top notch. I have also skied at Keystone and in North Carolina. I bring my godsons here for the Battlefield and throw in skiiing for a fun distraction. They have a very nice beginners slope and everything up to 3 double black diamonds with moguls. No, it's not a huge mountain or even classified as a mountain but fun, nonetheless. The staff is friendly and everything was well organized. They also have a great tubing run!

We went to this resort 2 days in a row.Their lifts stopped 3 times for a minimum of 10 min - 20 minutes! ! ( at different times within an hour or so ) . But since I had booked a hotel , I had to go the next day too. The next day, same issue. I asked to speak to the manager. Not only was he rude , but he had "mocking " tendencies too. I wanted a refund, but I might have as well spoken to a wall. The wall would have given me a blank expression, instead of the mockery that the manager gave. He had the audacity to lie to my face too. He told me " it was a matter of 8 minutes. We aren't refunding you for that ". I was on the lift for a minimum of 12 minutes because I checked my phone while on the lift. 2 minutes later, he said " yeah it was 8 and a half minutes " . 3 minutes later " oh yeah it was a matter of 8-10 minutes. One time he would say that the lift was down due to some incident with a kid, another time he would say " yeah. a belt got stuck " .. and I know that he was lying because after getting off the lift , I asked the technician who had to come with a snowmobile to fix the issue , and he told me that it was a technical issue. No incidents had happened . I will never EVER return to this place. Wasted time. Wasted money. Pfftt

Check it out. Liberty has the best instruction on the East coast and maybe in the country. For a small mountain they pack in a lot of terrain for all levels of skiing. I've skied the northeast and out west but for a local area I never tire of Liberty. The slope maintenance is some of the best anywhere. Get there early to enjoy the freshly groomed trails. Later in the day they get a little torn up, epically on warmer days. All the lifts are "quads" and are modern equipment. The staff is friendly and helpful. The instruction is fantastic. Remember, "friends don't let friends teach friends how to ski"

Not a very good mountain. The runs are VERY short, and there is very little variety. They do have a little bit of ungroomed/mogul stuff on the back of the mountain, but the runs are so short that you will spend far more time on the lifts than you will skiing. (Note that ALL of the challenging stuff is located on the back of the mountain. The front is all short, green level slopes.) There's not much variety in the park terrain, and even though it is all in one location, you can't get to it all from a single lift! To make it worse, its icy. This is to be expected in south PA, but on the same weekend (Feb 2015), a local competitor (Whitetail) had excellent conditions. Lift lines on a weekend were LONG and unorganized, and the lifts are all excessively slow, and stall on almost every ride. The good thing is that it is at least close to Washington, but so is Whitetail which is actually a very decent mountain. Things are likely to get worse at Liberty since they keep building more hotel rooms but not more skiable terrain.

Skiing is a special event for me. I learned to ski in Switzerland in the 1960's but now live in Virginia, so being able to take a snow day with only 1 and 1/2 hour drive is a real treat. I was delighted at how good the conditions were without a natural snowfall. The staff in the equipment rental area were very helpful as were those working the chair lifts. The lockers are accessed with a credit card, I appreciate that! No moguls, no crusty surfaced snow - a very fun day skiing. The cafeteria was reasonably well priced and I drove over to check out the tubing hill for another visit. I had a "live chat" with a representative on the web site before going and she was helpful as well.

Only a handful of beginner runs. Nice if you have all levels of skiers that want to ski together. It's definitely not even comparable to skiing in Utah or the Alps...but...if you don't want to drive far. Less than 5 hrs from Virginia Beach, depends on the traffic.

I enjoy Liberty better than Roundtop or Whitetail with two separate ski area (front and back), plus J-bar for the terrain park, yet I don't come here often because food service seems to be worse of three. Presidential weekend, Sunday, due to Very cold weather, place was very slow, around 7pm Sneaky Pete Pizza was closed, and we had to settle for 4 inch hot dog that didn't even cover the length of the bun (at least it was hot), cold 4 piece tender for $8, cold fries for $4. If you are going to charge this high at least serve it hot, I don't mind waiting 5 min for a hot tenders and fries. Monday, place was not that bad, couple min wait on the lift, yet there was no place to sit at the table, people were spread all over the place floor eating while folks in heavy boot trying to navigate. Please, make the dinning area little bit bigger.

Went up on a Friday mid-day hoping to avoid the crowds tubing as discussed in other posts. However even at 2 in the afternoon it was packed with unsupervised unruly children. The bathrooms were gross, with toilets overflowing. A bottle of water if $5. All of this was trumped by the kids. Children under 13 should be required to have an adult present with them and the workers need to be empowered to kick them off if they are misbehaving. Some of their behavior was especially dangerous for the little ones. While the price was reasonable they need to limit the number of ticket sales per hour to control the chaos.

These aren't big mountains, but it's enough for great family fun skiing, snowboarding and tubing. The lessons are great, and the staff is very helpful and friendly.

Pros: True, Liberty is only a 90-minute drive from DC so it makes for an easy day trip or weekend trip. So hence, it was SUPER CROWDED on Super Bowl Sunday. Cons: TOO CROWDED ON WEEKENDS. Too many beginners of all ages packed in a small amount of space relative to what’s available to intermediate and expert skiers on the rest of the mountain.Closer examination of what you get for your money: There’s only 16 trails on less than 100 acres of skiable area. Supposedly Liberty’s 35% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 25% expert. Translate 35% of 16 trails is 5.6 beginner trails and now look at a trail map on the Liberty website. The 5.6 green trails are all in the same green area and the trails are all short except for Dipsy Doodle (I’ll come back to this one). The picture should become more clear why the heck it was so freaking crowded! Because it’s touted as a great place to learn, the “greens” are all confined to the front of the mountain and the entire “green area” was way overcrowded to the point it’s almost unsafe because beginners not able to control their speed were crashing into other beginners practicing after their lesson. So are you beginning to see why I challenge why a sane person could justify another $117 to return to practice on the same 5.6 crowded, short, boring green trails? So this leads to the Next Con: The difference between green and blue is exponential! Translate 40% of 16 trails is 6.4 blue trails but look at the map, they’re longer and mostly on the back of the mountain. My boyfriend said it was way less crowded. And steeper. But I was getting bored with doing the same greens, so it was time to try Dipsy Doodle, the instructors like to call it the “wall of death”. We took the longer, faster lift to the top to see if the 1-hour level 4 lesson with 14 other adults helped me. The only way to access Dipsy Doodle is by a challenging blue. And it wasn’t a little harder, it was A LOT steeper lol. I tried a couple times, but kept falling. I need longer, more challenging, less crowded green trails to prepare me for true blue trails, not a big jump (literally!) from gentle bunny slopes to the “wall of death”. So that’s why Liberty doesn’t get my vote as a “best place to learn to ski”.More Cons: -Opens at 8am on weekends, even though we arrived before 9am, parking lot was pretty full and you’ll walk further with all your stuff. -Be prepared, do your research in advance, know what you want. Lines to purchase tickets felt like we were herded through, she didn’t take any time to offer advice or guidance on the best lesson package. Just take your money and move on to the next person. -For the 1st time visitor, when it’s crowded it’s chaotic, disorganized and everyone is out for themselves without watching their kids. Once you find the correct door to enter the rental place, for some reason there’s a line to get your helmet but no lines for boots or skis. You just look for an employee who looks like they’re not with a person and make a bee-line hoping to get to that person before someone else. Unlike Killington, no one measured my foot or asked what size boot. No one asked me any questions whatsoever. It was so impersonal and unfriendly. And all these kids bumping into you and running around like it’s their house or something. I missed the 10am lesson because I was just dumbfounded the lack of personal greeting, lack of information, lack of direction. On weekends seems all the employees are too busy to give advice or information. Mountain stats on Liberty and Killington are easy way to see why it’s worth it to take the train from DC to Rutland whether to learn to ski or for some amazing skiingLiberty: only 16 trails on less than 100 acres of skiable area, 35% beginner (5.6 trails), 40% intermediate (6.4 trails), and 25% expert (4 trails)Killington: six mountain areas, 1509 skiable acres, 73 miles of trails, 155 trails, 28% easier (43.4 trails), 33% more difficult (51.2 trails), 39% most difficult (60.4 trails), 22 lifts

As a pre-teen in the late 1970's Liberty and it's sister resort Round Top were local favorites of mine. I hadn't been back to Liberty until February 2 when I took my 10 1/2 year old son. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. It was my first time back since they opened the back side of the mountain and it really has changed the feel (and size) of this resort. My son who began skiing last year and who has only skied White Tail commented that he had more fun at Liberty. It was also my perception that Liberty had more to offer for beginners, advanced beginners and intermediate skiers. If you're advanced intermediate or expert you might find White Tail to offer more.Liberty rental office was very organized and the staff very helpful. We were in and out in very little time. The skiing/rental prices were similar to White Tail although a tad less expensive. Ski School staff were knowledgeable and organized. The lodge and food establishments were good and like White Tail a bit pricey. Overall a great day skiing.I recommend taking advantage of teacher work days and skiing during the week when the crowds are less. On Monday, February 2 there were never any lines at any of the lifts. Makes the experience all the more pleasant.Pros:1. Close proximity to D.C. (90 minutes);2. Plenty of beginner/advanced beginner and intermediate slopes to choose from;3. Ski School; 4. Rental Office; and5. Friendly atmosphere.Cons:1. Pricey food (similar to other nearby resorts but thought I'd mention);2. Lack of challenging advanced intermediate and expert slopes (fewer options compared to White Tail); and3. Small Hill which means that most runs are only a few minutes long. White Tail has more elevation and longer runs overall.I would recommend Liberty over White Tail if you are a beginner or intermediate skier. Liberty also has a small lodge/Hotel that is conveniently located on site.
