cross timbers state park

We just spent a weekend here in the Timber Walker Cabin in the Toronto Point area of the state park. From what I could tell, the park areas to the south of the lake do not get as much use as the northern part where we were at. The cabin was wonderful, surrounded by trees but also allowing a lake view. Good fire ring and grill. Comfortable, just a bit of a hassle having to bring our own bedding and towels. The hiking trails are really good--from easy to difficult, take your pick. Lovely old trees, mossy paths, flint and sandstone. Great variety of birds--chickadees, crows, cardinals, woodpeckers, geese, ducks, seagulls, and even some pelicans. There are lots of good RV and tenting spots. The town of Toronto has one restaurant open at night and . . . I think that was the only business open when we were there! We did go up to HWY 54 and there is a cool little general store/cafe where I bought some postcards created by a local artist. Bring groceries with you!This is probably not a hotspot for teens or the younger crowd, but if you like hikes, the lake, fishing, a peaceful fire at night, you would probably enjoy it!

Cross Timbers made for a fun camping trip within easy driving distance from Wichita. The hiking and view over the lake from the hilly rocky shore was great! Some of the facilities were run down, like the kayak rental area. "We haven't rented in years," was the park attendents comment. The playground was great. There were lots and lots of ticks. We didn't wear much DEET and each of us picked up a couple. Our poor little dog was covered. We were new dog owners and discovered flea and tick dip only after trying to pick them all off individually. There is a fantastic little pizza, pasta place in Toronto. We were all tired after driving out and setting up our camp. We decided to go into town for dinner. I was suddenly very awake when I realized that the salad had real olive oil dressing, completely wonderful and unexpected. The pizza was fantastic too, and such a warm and welcoming lady that runs the place. Overall a great little trip. Go prepared for the ticks and it's well worth the visit.
