The 1950s All-Electric House at the Johnson County Museums gives visitors a look at a suburban Kansas City home of the future in the Fifties. Built in 1954 as a model home by Kansas City Power & Light Co., the 5-room ranch house showcased technology available after WWII. Conveniences we now take for granted, like a garage door opener, a living room wall that slid back to reveal a tv, and a patio wired for sound, are just a few of the features that wowed people at the time and fascinate visitors today. We were amazed how advanced the house was for its time, and how modern it still seems. The house was donated to the museum by a family who lived in it for about 40 years. Guided tours are available every half hour Monday through Saturday. There is a small admission fee. For more information check the Johnson County Museum's website: http://www.jocogov.org/dept/museum/visit/1950s-all-electric-house. Phone: 913-715-2550

I was born in the late 1950's and have a limited personal memory of what life was like then. For those of my generation and those born later, this amazing house goes a long way towards showing what life was like in the United States during the 1950's. The spirit of everything can be accomplished and life is going to always get better is on display in this house. The guide was excellent and well informed about all sorts of details concerning this house. For anyone at all interested in the history of this country, this house is a must-see. This is a museum of living history. Although the house itself is small, the experience is huge. Highly, highly recommend going.

I remember seeing this house in the 1950's as a child. It was presented as the very latest in technology and home comfort. For some reason the clothes press made an "ha" impression on me then. I'm glad they put it back the way it was. I could see myself living there very comfortably.Love the TV hidden behind the painting on the wall.

Really neat that someone took this house and memorialized the era. A fun little way to spend a couple of hours on a weekend afternoon and worth visiting.

This tour is a great value!! I liked seeing and hearing about the different "features" of the house (like the fake skylight...or the waist-high outlets). Very interesting & low cost! Definitely recommend it if you're in the area!

If you love all things retro, this is a must see. For a very small fee, a tour guide takes you through a time capsule show house that GE had built as a "home of the future," with gadgets all over the house. Afterwards, there is a free museum you can visit to learn about the history of local Native American tribes, history of the area, and an interactive play area for kids to make puppet shows, design fashions, and play doctor.

I went for the Christmas display. The house was fun (If a little sparse) with the alminum tree and vintage toys. Well worth the visit.

I found this completely by accident, but it's so cool. It's in the Johnson County museum, which is free and has a great kid's play area.

This is the first all-electric house in the Kansas City area. It was a model home for the time and its history is fascinating and that it was saved is great for those that want to take the tour. It is at the Johnson County Museum. There is a small charge and tours are on the hour.

The Johnson County Museum preserved perfect the historical past of the beginning of the county, the 1950's pretty cool to walk into the past.
