A real working farm with all the comforts. Welcoming people, great food, (incredible eggs...) and the peace of the heartland. And the cost is remarkable.

Visiting the Sisters of Heartland Farm was definitely a great experience to see how to live in a less disruptive manner, or more earth and eco-friendly. There are lots of workshops here, I'd recommend going to them.Being away from all the city-life was wonderful, in company of a lot of flora and fauna. I went with a friend but I can see kids having a lot of fun here with the alpacas.

Went to this farm with a bunch of my friends and we all loved it! Reserve a whole day to do it, because there's so much to do! They sell burgers and hotdogs at the end of the apple picking and popcorn and egg rolls where you pick up pumpkins and berries. There's a huge maze, oh and also, safe some time at the end of the day to go to any of the 5 miles within a 5 mile radius!!! Overall, love this place, would love to go again soon.

My husband and I stayed at the Hermitage House over the weekend. We came for the experience of staying in a straw bale structure but came away with more. The sisters were wonderful. As other reviewers have stated, it is simple and comfortable and great way to connect with nature. I would recommend Heartland Farm for family's wanting to spend time together away from technology. We wished we had taken our 9 year old with us.

Heartland Farm is a great place to "get lost." Going "off grid" is possible there if desired. With no city lights nearby, one can view the night sky without problem. The staff are very accomodating, providing home-cooked meals with much of the food raised on-site. The hermitage gives one a chance to simply "be" and enjoy the wildlife and fauna. This is the place to get away from everything, and enjoy the simple basics.

The sisters and staff made me feel right at home from the moment I stepped out of my car. The alpacas were delightful Anne the little gift shop was full of handmade soap, yarn, seed packets and even fresh eggs. You have to experience it yourself.

A group of us went to Heartland Farm for their open house. I was surprised to see so many people there for it being so far out in the country. The kids adored the alpacas and the dogs. They also thought the composting toilet was a hoot. The Sisters were baking cookies in the solar oven--best cookie I've had in a long time! It was very relaxing and peaceful. I hope we can go back again soon.

A group of us stayed there for four days this March, doing some service for the farm and taking a short break from our busy lives. There is not an ounce of pretension or glitter about this place; it is peaceful, contemplative and bucolic in the best sense of the word. The accommodations (we stayed in Hedge House) reminded some of us of our grandparents houses growing up - everything worked fine and it was very comfortable, but it was also clearly a simple place. No dishwasher, no cable, no internet, lots of peace and quiet and comfort. On the grounds are the alpacas, the chickens, the dogs, the sisters, mainly Marilyn and Jean, and the two awesome staff members. While it is a quiet place, there is a lot to do. THere is a pottery studio, and weaving/loom area, a lot of art type stuff, some decent trails, a massage studio, and a ton of wonderful growing things just outside your door. Our kids (11 and 7) loved it! This is a great spot for anyone looking for a simple, inexpensive getaway where you can breathe deeply and reconnect. Highly recommended.

Under the boundless Kansas heavens, the Heartland Farm is a place to fall in love with, to come back to again and again. The Dominican Sisters and volunteers who run it have poured their hearts into the farm and created a place of beauty and family, education, fascination, and rest. Anything you need, you can find at Heartland.I spent some time there in June of 2013 helping out with their yearly "Peace Camp" for kids and doing some chores. I saw Heartland Farm brimming with life, laughter and water balloons bouncing off every surface in 103-degree heat, and then I saw it quiet and serene, when all the nooks and spaces lay open to reflection, peace incarnate on an endless plain. The Sisters welcome visitors for an hour or for days, but you will want to stay longer than an hour. At Heartland Farm, alpacas take delicious weeds from your hands with their warm lips, and two of the best anywhere dogs run to kiss you when you arrive. A cozy hermitage shelters an occasional retreatant over by the pond. At Heartland Farm, you can go on a walk through the pasture, past the pond, and over the creek -- on the path of serenity and restoration of the soul, until you come to the labyrinth of waving grasses, and you can lose yourself for a while in the whisper of Nature, of the wind, or of God. And when you come back from your walk, you can exhale the last of your tension with a massage by one of the Sisters, a certified masseuse, or browse pictures and pottery and the softest little things made of alpaca wool in the gift shop. You can feel the wind on your face, swinging on a tree swing. You can sit on the grass in the fruit garden or on a bench in the old silo, where windows of colorful glass let through magical light and mix it with the sky. Once you've been to Heartland Farm, you'll want to come back, and you'll want to bring your children. They have events: stargazing and celebration... They have happy critters -- chickens, toads -- to look at, crafts to learn, food to taste, organic farming to discuss, arts to explore. They always have something going on. And whenever I cannot be there, a little something is missing from my heart.I fell in love with Heartland Farm from my first day there. It truly is the heart of the Heartland.

Our trip to Heartland Farm was a surprise present for my wife. I chose the day long adventure learning to make bread and jelly. The day was much more than we expected. A fantastic experience. We learned how to make three kinds of jelly, bread, and cinnamon rolls. We even cooked some of our product in the outside solar oven. And everyone took home some of what our class created. We experienced wonderful butternut squash soup as our main course luncheon meal (along with salad, veggies and dessert). We bought a butternut squash at the farm and using their recipe made it at home for guests. The encore was delicious as well.We got the grand tour: alpacas, chickens, cats and dogs.. In general enjoy a peaceful day of learning and growing... Being with people who love God and simple things. The drive from home and back was relaxing as well. The drive home was shorter because we spent the hours planning how we would use the wonderful talents we learned.Since then, I've made many loaves of bread (thank you sister), some really fantastic cinnamon rolls, and tomorrow I'm making jelly. We will come again.

What a joy it is to visit the Catholic sisters and Heartland Farm! I have had the privilege of visiting several times. Each time I have enjoyed petting the alpacas, exploring with farm dogs, Lenny and Lily, sampling homemade food, or chatting with the Sisters and other visitors. I highly recommend Heartland Farm to families, couples, and individuals interested in learning more about sustainable living, enjoying the outdoors, taking one of the numerous classes, or for those simply looking to escape for a weekend. Thank you for sharing a little piece of your life with me!

There are so many possible things to do at heartland Farm: play with the animals- alpacas, dogs, cats, chickens; walk the trails and the labyrinth in the pasture; sit around the fire pit, as children play on the tree swing and the other swing sets; see the Art Studio which has a pottery, and spinning room; experience the straw bale buildings and the solar power at the hermitage; and of course, stay in the comfortable guest house or hermitage. I learned that the Sisters put a new porch and ramp on the north side of the guest house! I will have to come back to see this!Terry W. Kentucky

I have had the pleasure of being a guest at Heartland Farm for two consecutive years. I have attended the Meteor Showers event in August, that includes a cookout and entertainment. Definitely worth the six-hour drive. The accommodations are wonderful and the farm is just a delight to visit. You can be as busy as you want, or you can just relax and meditate. Visiting the alpacas is a must. The Dominican Sisters of Peace definitely live up to their name in this peaceful environment.Norma G.

Heartland Farm is a place for experiencing many things: the simple beauty of creation; the hospitality of the Dominican Sisters of Peace; learning experiences in spinning wool, various crafts, organic gardening, etc.; a place for prayerful retreat; engaging with a herd of alpacas; and events pertaining to the care of creation. You can't go wrong with a visit to Heartland Farm!
