Whihala Beach used to be the place to go to watch the fireworks along with swimming. But to me it is sad if u don't live in Indiana, because outside Indiana you will have to pay to enjoy.

I grew up in Whiting, and will probably call it Whiting Park all my life. However, this is not the Whiting Park I remember. On recent visits in October and December, I was able to see some of the improvements. All I can say is WOW!! It's beautiful! It'll be exciting to see when everything is finished.Lots of old and new trees, a beautiful lakefront walk, gazebos, long pier, beautiful gardens, even a little stone house like I remember as a kid. Tennis courts, parking (even charging stations for electric vehicles), boat launch. At Christmas time, there was a lovely light display to enjoy from the comfort of your car. Weather permitting, an outstanding view of Chicago's skyline. Nearby ball fields are stunning (and I'm not really a baseball fan).To my knowledge, no charge to drive through, but they were going to implement parking fees again. I'll try to post some pics later; there's not an option at this time. All in all, something wonderful to come home to.
