You can see the Cape Hatteras lighthouse from miles away on approach. Watch out for the deer as you enter the park grounds! Though closed while we were there, visitors can pay to climb to the top of the enormous (200 feet?) structure. We visited the museum instead and were impressed with the historical displays of seaside life in the area. A wonderful display of the history of WWII U-boat action in the area, and a fascinating exhibit describing the engineering involved in moving the Lighthouse structure 2900 feet inland to save it from the ever-shifting sands and changing shoreline in the area!

Bring a group and play frisbee or something. Take pictures in front of the light house. The gift shop is open 10-5 most days.

We go to OBX after all the tourist leave, so getting up to Hatteras Lighthouse was much easier. Once you climb to the top the views are spectacular. Small entrance fee was charged since it's part of the National Park Service, I got the passport which allows me to get other National Park stamps added.Caveat: I went back in 2010 so it was before the date selected on the When Did You Visit on the Trip Advisor site (sorry TA, should have dates going further back).

What a beautiful lighthouse. Couldn't climb, unfortunately, as it was closed this time of year. I believe it opens around Easter. Check schedules. The surrounding grounds, camp sites, trails are great. Good gift shop.

This is one of the tallest lighthouses we visited so far. It is very impressive and beautiful. We did not get to go up since it is close for the winter but it was worth the trip anyway. It was an hour long drive from the entrance to the lighthouse. My tip for you is to try go early as it get really dark since the road is in between waters.

We travelled about 60 miles from Kitty Hawk to see the CAHA lighthouse which was not open to climbing this early in the year. We loved the area with great beach shot and beautiful lighthouse area. It was a long narrow road to get there, many places were a little wet. It was a fun ride and the pictures we took were awesome

This was my second visit to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the first one being nearly 10 years ago. I visited in January 2015, so the lighthouse was closed for climbing. I still enjoyed my visit to the grounds and the gift shop/visitor's center. There were high clouds and fog in the sky, so I did not have the clear blue sky for the background in my pictures, but they turned out well all the same! And I enjoyed seeing the deer that live nearby. One came out of the woods and seemed quite tame--I was able to get some pictures of it. The people working in the visitor's center were very knowledgeable about the history of the lighthouse and the moving of the lighthouse.

My Wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Tourist Centre. In addition to the great facilities we were most impressed by the well-informed tour guides who were on hand to provide answers to our questions. They provide lectures throughout the day on different topics related to the lighthouse and the general area. The only fee payable is to enter the lighthouse and climb the stairs to the top.Strongly recommended, if you're in the area and have the time you'll not be disappointed

We attempted to see all the lighthouses in the outer banks and found each very interesting. The people at each lighthouse are very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions.

The lighthouse was closed due to the off season, but still perfect for pictures. The grounds are well kept.

We were just there to take a photo. The lighthouse was not open and their were repair works so it was cordoned off.

This place is a must visit on any trip to Outer Banks. The backdrop of this lighthouse is spectacular. Plenty of great beaches all along the drive on outer banks as well.

Been here once to two times a year since I was a little kid even before they moved the lighthouse to another location, Only climbed it once but always a great place to bring the family or just to hang out at the beach, Great swimming and fishing around this area too!

This is a unique opportunity to see and climb a beautiful lighthouse that has played such an interesting role in our history, and then drive out onto one of the most spectacular beaches in the country. There are few, if any, places in the country where you can get this experience. Imagine seeing the Atlantic, and the coast, from that little curly cue of land that sticks way the heck out east into the Atlantic!
