Went with my Mom to visit and were pleasantly surprised by the wealth of the owners and the knowledge of the tour guides. Is a beautiful place and beautiful things.

This attraction has been closed for sometime. There is still a great walking trail around some of the property with interesting historical info about the former grand country home. You can see the home from the trail. It was a gem in its day. Sorry mismanagement closed it forever.

...little waterfall on the property.---a little lake on the property.---an area where the family used to chillax next to the lake---btw their lake fared much better than the richer, more pretentious rj Reynolds family lake in Winston---woods----trees---and old moonshine still----okay, not really a still----pump house----other hikers----the family bbq pt where they used to chillax and make bruinswick stew, im told.So yeah, the house of knick knacks is closed up tight as a decompression chamber, but you can enjoy the land.

Chinqua-Penn Plantation is an English manor house near Reidsville built in the early twentieth century by mavens Betsy and Jeff Penn. In its glory days, the house was stuffed to the ceiling with the loot of the world, acquired by the Penns in extensive travels. After their deaths, CPP was bequeathed to the University of NC system, which could not figure out how to manage it although CPP was a state and national treasure. UNC sold CPP to a private citizen, Calvin Phelps, CEO of Renegade Tobacco, in Mocksville. Phelps was busted by the feds because of a massive attempt to avoid paying tobacco MSA tariffs on Renegade products. He declared bankruptcy, and as a result, all of CPPs treasures were auctioned away this summer in Greensboro. The plantation itself is closed, probably for good. The house is still there, sans its storied furniture, art and antiques, and is no longer open to the public. The grounds and the house itself are falling into disrepair. This is a tragedy and a great loss. It was a five-star venue in its heyday, but now there is no reason to go.

Unfortunately, Chinqua Penn Plantation is no longer there. It was bought with the intentions to continue its grandness, among other personal reasons, but the new owner had to file bankruptcy and all furnishings, etc are gone. There are no longer any tours so a trip there would sadly be wasted. So a rating of one is given.

out in the middle of reidsville, nc sits this home that frankly is not worth seeing - ....at one time it may have been something -but today - shut it down.

We had a lot of fun touring the house and grounds. The funiture collection is AMAZING. Check the website though, because I have heard its no longer open to the public

Beautiful property with all factual and historical antiques on the property. The house is amazing. The grounds are very well kept and gorgeous.

I enjoyed touring here so much, the house was quite elegant, and the tour guides were so knowledgeble about the history of the furnature and paintings and made it very interesting. They had great items in the gift shop too .. oh yes! :)

I had always wanted to go and I found out this might be my last chance. Absolutely beautiful. I hope that they find a way to keep it a tourist attraction

We have lvoe Chinqua Penn for decades. This visit was very sad as the house and grounds were unkemp and showed all the signs of neglect. The tour guide was very poor, commenting on the new owner's added pieces rather than the treasures of the Penns. It is only loyalty to the plantation's fine past that led me to give it more than a 1.

Closed down, owner went bankrupt and is going to jail

Sad to say the furnishings of this place are being auctioned off. It is a one of a kind home and over time has not been able to find anyone that can afford the upkeep of the place.

It was amazing; just sorry that its being sold yet again.
