We visited just for a couple of hours but is was so beautiful. I can't wait to take my boys back for a visit and hopefully some hiking.

Pilot Mountain State Park is divided into 2 parts: The Pinnacle (Mountain Section) and the River Section (inc. Horne Creek) connected by a 9 mile corridor/horse trail. This is too much to take in during an 1-2 day visit. The Pinnacle section has awesome vistas, trails, camping, picnic areas and scheduled "Nature Walks" to show flora/fauna indigenous to the region (inc. Timber and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes). The River Section has fishing, group camping (reservation req.), hiking, and the Horne Creek Living Farm exhibit. There are also scheduled "Nature Walks" that are well worth your participation. Pilot Mountain State Park has a great heritage going back to the Civil War and is well worth a visit (Or, 2 or 12)! Bring a tent or camper and explore at your leisure. The campsites are very well maintained and have 2 bathhouses plus pre-chopped firewood for your convenience (nominal charge on the 'Honor System').

It was 18 degrees but beautiful view of the Piedmont landscape below. Actually a very unusual rock structure somewhat like Devil's Tower out west. Just a lone mountain away from the mountain range in the distance.

We loved this park. The ranger at the bottom of the park was very helpful and friendly. Drove up the mountain and then did some hiking on the trails. Beautiful vistas and interesting rock formations. Clean restrooms as a bonus.

If the weather is good, this is the place to hike. The grade isn't difficult and there is wildlife and flowering bushes along the trail. The view is outstanding from anywhere along the trail and the trail takes you all the way around the mountain

We were staying in Mt Airy and have been to Pilot Mountain before but wanted to head up there again. We enjoyed the views very much. Got some great pictures. The grounds are well kept.

The views are beautiful and very peaceful. There is a ranger office near the bottom, but there isn't much there. You can hike up from the office to the top of the overlook. I don't recommend it though. It is very arduous. You can drive to a parking lot near the top and do a short hike around the mountain. It's about a mile. The trail is not too vertical. It takes you to some great overlooks and you can see some interesting rock formations. There is a restroom at the top and a picnic area. The picnic area has grills, tables, and in warmer weather I think it has running water near the tables. If you go to Pilot Mountain in the fall, go on a weekday. The park is packed during fall weekends. Take an area map, when you look out at the horizon, you'll know which mountains are which.

I loved this place. Of course I like rocks, big rocks, small rocks, oddly shaped rocks, colorful rocks...you get the picture. My husband and I went. We went to the overlook, then took the trail that loops around and ends up back where we started. The views are far ranging but flat. I'm from the mountains where you see mountains, ridges and valleys from the overlooks. So these views were different yet still spectacular. I took more pictures of the various rocks than anything else. I will definitely go back.

We drove up to the top and hiked up to get a better look at the pinnacle. It was 30 degrees out but sunny. This gave us great views of the whole area.

Beautiful views, peaceful, quite. A place to relax and get recharged with the beauty of nature! Add it to your bucket list. We did and are glad that we were finally able to cross it off.

It is a beautiful place and if you love to hike going to the top is great . We like to look at it and then drive down to Mountain Man's.

Very nice town with a main street that is just fun to walk down and shop, the little country store was so nice and smelled like fall inside and the antiques stores are to just die for.

Very crowed on the weekend when we visited, but what a view. Over 1400 feet above the valley below. The site is a state park now. The road is well maintained, but quite twisty and steep. I put the car in 2nd gear going down and still had to ride the brakes most of the way.

Hike up Pilot Mountain and enjoy the breath-taking scenery. One of the local attractions definitely worth the visit.
