Mark Smith, the owner, offered to be interviewed by my students for their project on the rights and responsibilities surrounding the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Besides the fascinating personal narrative of his memories of the days before the eruption, the day of, and the impact on the property owners in the blast zone, Mr. Smith provided a lifetime's analysis of what has happened since. It's a story of good intentions at best and misguided power at worst. I highly recommend experiencing the effects of the Mount St. Helens eruption on the total ecosystem including the people of Cowlitz County. The sediment retention dam is particularly troubling. I will definitely return for a horseback ride tour with my family.
