Anyone interested in the cultural phenomena of La Virgen de Guadalupe in Mexico should go to see this play. It is staged in the Mission San Juan Bautista and features over 50 actors, singers and dancers telling the story of the arrival of Catholicism in Mexico, its impact on the indigenous people, the miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary to a poor native farmer and how she became the exalted figure that she is today. The play is presented in Spanish, but there is a summary of each act and musical number available in English. It is immensely popular with families returning year after year to see the presentation, so shows sell out.Combine this play with an overnight visit to San Juan Bautista and you will feel like you just took a trip back to Alta California in the 1840's.

This is a great cultural experience....Christmas play partly in Spanish...You sit in the middle of the action and the actors are all around you.

Saw the biennial production. Fantastic music acoustics and creative use of the space by the company. Highly recommended. Tip--everyone in town is IN the play or related to some one in it. Easy conversation starter.
