My wife and I were up in Amador County tasting wines, and Jeff Runquist Wines was our second stop of the day. It was a very pleasant experience. The tasting room has some tables out front on the porch, and we saw several groups who brought food, sent a person inside who reappeared with a bottle of wine and glasses, and they then proceeded to have an enjoyable picnic. It was a positive sign and indicator of the very friendly atmosphere and customer-friendly attitude that pervaded the tasting room and the entire tasting experience. The tasting room has a quite large light-filled central tasting area with multiple people serving wines, and a second serving area, perhaps for private tastings, that was not being used. As far as I can remember, there was no tasting fee. Cheese plates were available, but our palates were fresh enough that we did not opt to get one. The woman who served as our hostess was knowledgeable about the wines, and very personable. She was not afraid to express her own opinions about the wines, and which she preferred. We were primarily interested in tasting reds. I believe we tried the Pinot Noir, the Barbera, perhaps the Charbono, the Petite Sirah, and the “R” Zinfandel. We ended up sampling one or two additional red wines that “just happened to be open”, and we appreciated the opportunity. Of the wines we sampled, all of which were good, we particularly enjoyed the 2013 Petite Sirah ($28) and the 2012 “R” Zinfandel ($26), and were happy to acquire some. Our hostess suggested that we also try the Muscat Canelli ($18), and this turned out to be a lightly sparkling semisweet wine similar to Moscato Asti from Italy. We happily added a bottle of this to our purchases, and again appreciated the opportunity to try it. In summary, the tasting room provides a very pleasant environment in which to taste. Although there were perhaps a dozen or more other people also tasting, there was room for more, and the tasting room was well enough staffed that you didn’t feel abandoned or neglected. You had a very pleasant interaction with the staff. You never felt pressured to buy; the wines were very good and sold themselves. Although we had had lunch before visiting, on future visits, we may follow the lead of what appeared to be local residents who brought a lunch and purchased a bottle to share. We were both left with a very positive impression, and it is easy to understand why so many others who have visited and reviewed Jeff Runquist Wines before us have given it such high ratings. We echo their positive sentiment. It is a place you should visit, and perhaps with a picnic in tow. Note that it is only open Thursday through Monday from 11-5, which is true of many other smaller wineries in the area so plan your visit and tasting schedule accordingly.

We stopped in to pick-up our club shipments and just had to taste what we were picking-up and some others just to see how they were tasting. Their wines are always delicious and fairly priced. Our server was a delight.

We are wine club members of Runquist Winery and it is definitely worth every penny. Well, come to think of it, we really do not pay anything, we just commit to 12 bottles of wine a year at a 20% discount--why wouldn't we join?. I think they have the best wines in the region and their staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We are big fan of their events. I look forward to going to Runquist Winery to pick up our wines several times a year--It is a great excuse to get up in the foothills and buy another bottle of their Barbera, Petite Sirah, or Petite Verdot--my personal favorites and to visit many of the other Amador wineries.

We, along with several friends, are members of various wine clubs, both in Amador and Calaveras Counties. We have found Runquist wines to be absolutely superb, and of course, we are members of their wine club. We just visited them again in August and their Barbara, Syrah (Paso Robles), Touriga, Tempranillo, and "Z" Zinfandel (all 2012) are our favorites. We have yet to taste a Runquist wine that didn't please our pallet, and the prices are unbelievable. Thanks so much Jeff. We may need to buy another wine refrigerator.

As wine club members we always attend the annual wine club appreciation BBQ at the Jeff Runquist Winery. As we sat under a walnut tree looking out at the Amador hills covered in vineyards enjoying great food, wine and music, we were inspired to write this review. This is a very, very special winery. The wines are spectacular. Jeff Runquist is wine maker who strives for perfection, and perfection is what he gets. The staff at the winery and tasting room are friendly, helpful and attentive. You never have to wait long for that next taste. They always have smiles, especially the Lorrees, two special wine room folks who make every visit special. The wine tasting room is spacious and well designed to make sure we all get to "belly up to the bar". Greeted with free special cheeses, you feel special. It is clear the staff and the service mirror the co-owner, Jeff's wife Margie. What a special person! Never without big sincere smile and warm hug, she makes you feel like you are family. The fact is these folks exemplify the tasting experience at most of the Sierra Foothill (Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Nevada) Wineries....again...special. Forget the "big deal" Napa, this is where you need to go. Great job Margie and Jeff!

We stopped in as the last stop after a long day of education and wine tasting. We had visited the winery before and were very impressed. We had our Guide Dog Puppy in training with us so we found a spot at the end of the tasting table while this man set us up for our tasting. We tasted several great wines and as it turned out our server was none other than Jeff Rrunquist. It was great hearing him talk with the other folks tasting that day and now that I know him will be back to pick his brain.

Jeff Runquist is located in a wonderfully modern barn-like facility that has convenient parking. Upon walking in the tasting room, you are greeted by an enthusiastic tasting staff and a large four-sided tasting bar that can easily accommodate you and your fellow tasting buddies. The staff kindly provides cheese and cracker plates to accompany your tasting. The wines were all exceptional - Barbera being our favorite - and most would clearly benefit from hiding in your wine collection for a few years to age. These great wines will only improve with age!

I really enjoy the Runquist wines. I subscribe thru their wine club, and the Service is as good as their wines, excellent.I have visited their winery and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We received several great recommendations ranging from restaurants to 'other wineries', imagine that, all the recommendations were spot on !!

Best red wines, especially varietals, in Amador. Being a wine club member has great benefits not including the discount on purchases. Plus free cheese and bread!
  • hiroshit870
All of their red wines (they only make reds) are excellent. We got a nice tour of the winemaking facility during the visit also.
