monterey county agricultural & rural life museum

This museum has the history of agriculture and rural life in Southern Monterey County all wrapped up in San Lorenzo Park. Exhibits include actual old rural buildings, a horse shoeing barn, many old farm vehicles and the latest addition is a building detailing the importance of irrigation to the Salinas Valley. It's well worth a couple of hours of your time.

For what it is it's nice. A couple of antique cars used by the locals back in the day. Many antique farm implements and tractors, etc. in need of restoration, but it all takes MONEY. There are also descriptive photos and company logos that help tell the history of farming in the Salinas Valley. It's worth a visit.

Good part: outlying buildings -- school, depot, Spreckels house, interesting [perhaps more for adults.]Bad: The major bulk of the museum is too general to be of much interest to people who have seen ag museums or know anything at all about California history, although there are some great exhibits for kids. But it was so unbearably hot -- the staff also described it as a sauna and tried to stay in the somewhat-cooler but not really cooler gift shop. Hope to board of directors will take staff's reports seriously so that large fans could be installed to mitigate the heat; we are people who try to pore over every detail of a museum but just couldn't stand to be there long, even with a personal mister in hand. Museum of Irrigation couldn't be opened because of lack of staff; be sure to call some days ahead to be sure it can be arranged, as the film there is said to be excellent but can't be sold or put on Youtube and can only be seen there.

This is one of the best parks we have been here to see historic agricultural equipment. Salinas Valley is a big agricultural part of California.In addition there are museums (irrigation) and historic buildings such as homes and schools.We spent about 90 minutes wandering through the park.

I brought my parents here on a Friday after I had checked it out, and they really enjoyed it. Staff member Eron told us about the museum exhibits and gave us tours of the farm house, schoolhouse, and even let us look through the tractor barn. We walked around the train station and outdoor equipment exhibits ourselves. There's also a blacksmith barn and History of Irrigation Museum that we'll check out next time. Recommended if you like history, farm equipment, and motorized machinery. (I had no idea this was here until I looked for attractions along Highway 101 using AAA's TripTik travel planning site.)You might call ahead to verify hours and tour availability. Apparently they have school tours on some weekdays, and the website's hours didn't completely match the sign on the outside of the museum. Admission to the museum and tours is free, but it's in San Lorenzo Park, and the entry fee for the park is $6 on weekdays and $8 on weekends and holidays per car except for seniors and walk-ins. The park is nice, too; it's along the Salinas River. It's at the Broadway Street exit from 101. The park is on one side of the freeway, and on the other side of the underpass is a cluster of fast food, gas stations, and motels.
