Few of the original prairie grasslands remain. Cattle grazing and development has destroyed most of the USA's original prairies. You can get an idea of what they must have looked like in their original glory at the Black Kettle National Grassland, at Hwy. 47 and Hwy. 47A, near Cheyenne, OK, around the monument to the Battle of the Washita, between Custer's forces and the local Cheyenne Indians. The park rangers at the visitors' center are very helpful and knowledgeable. This is a beautiful, quiet, place, and an unforgettable must-see.
