slaughterhouse covered bridge

This bridge is still in use and also not far away from three similar bridges on Cox Brook road. The bridge and road are quite narrow. A car coming the other way had to slowly squeeze past me just after I left the bridge.

Just north of Norwich on VT-12. This bridge is set on a single lane road about 1/4 mile west of the road. Places to park on both sides and easy to walk down to the river on the northwest side of the bridge. There was even a swing rope tied to a nearby tree - classic America.

What I liked best about this bridge was the path you can walk along the river to get good pictures from. It's on a dead end road, so there is very little traffic. The river by the bridge is a local swimming hole as evidenced by the rope swing hanging from a tree. It's so close to the other bridges in the area I cannot imagine why folks wouldn't visit here.

Love this bridge - no one really goes there because they are more interested in the three bridges that are down the road. I used to take my kids there when they were very little - we lived down the road - and they always said that I need to make a wish when I was crossing it. Well, I can say that wishes do come true! If you get a chance to be in Northfield Falls check it out - it's very private - but don't expect too much - you need to remember that at one time long ago it severed a very real purpose. (though my review says I was there in March 2013 I was there in the late 80's and early 90's but I've been there may times since and nothing has changed).

It at the bottom of a hill that is easy to drive by and not notice. Located over a deep gorge the best photo spot is from the hill looking down the road at it with some fall foliage in the foreground. Come visit the Slaughterhouse!
