My wife and I visited this lake summer of 2014. this is one of about 3-4 lakes down FR 300. The lakes all site on the Mogollon Rim, which is the Southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Excellent views can be seen looking south any were near the edge off FR 300. The view goes on for hundreds of miles! The lake gets its name from an island/knoll in the middle of it! During most months you can watch Bald Eagles hunting/diving for trout! I believe there is a nest on the knoll as well. The lake is popular with kayakers and fisherman. Trout fishing is pretty good from the shore and boat. From the 260 exit left (north) at the Woods Canyon Lake turn off. This is paved for the first mile or two then turns to graded dirt road in great condition for 2wd/low clearance passenger vehicles. Just follow FR 300 West to reach Bear Canyon and Knoll Lake. There are signs posted for each lake. Each lake does have camping near its shores and restrooms. Fee camping can be had at Knoll Lake and free camping is available on some of the other nearby forest roads. There is a boat ramp on the North side of Knoll Lake.
