What a pleasant surprise in this rural area near Waynesboro, GA and about 30 minutes south Augusta just west of US25. In my opinion Applewood is the best public course near Augusta and rivals most of the private clubs too! It is routed through an old apple orchard and is 6935 yards from the tips with a slope rating of 124. It is 6310 yards from the white tees we played, with a slope of 117. With the speed, firmness and undulation of the greens it played much harder! Chips and putts can easily run away from you, but pros deal with this every day and slopes are determined based on a zero handicap pro so that is one reason the slope rating is not higher. This is a very solid layout with no weak holes but none are particularly spectacular either, just a very good golf course. Although get ready for undulating, fast and very firm greens of Tif-Drawf Bermuda. The turf on the fairways is Bermuda 419 and they were so immaculate that it was hard to improve your lie, not that we tried. The course has strategically placed sand traps that are well tended. On the back nine there are several dog leg holes that bring water into play and challenge you to cut off the corner. There is a quality practice facility with a large putting green that emulates the undulating greens on the course and a nice driving range. The 6000sf clubhouse has a well stocked pro shop and a nice restaurant. To me this is what golf is all about solid golf, great playing conditions at an excellent value. Rates may change but in prime time on the weekend it was only $38 including tax! They have even better deals in the afternoons and on slower weekdays. The combination of great golf at a fantastic value gives Applewood my 5 Star rating!
