I highly recommend an overnight in the area, so you can see the high tide and the low tide. I could not believe the tide change, from a rough sea and the waves pounding the rocks to a beautiful beach on low tide.

We happened to find Playa de las Catedrales as we were driving from Santander to A Coruna on E 70, the Cantabrian Highway. Needing gas, we pulled off at Exit 508, Ribadeo, turned right, then right again to the first gas station at the edge of town. Retracing our way back to E 70, we saw the sign for Las Catedrales, decided we'd take a break, and turned right toward the sea. WOW! Were we surprised at the gorgeous beach, rock cliffs, arches and other formations we found! The closest thing I can compare this to is the Great Ocean Drive between Melbourne and Warnambool in Australia, with its beautiful rock formations, the Twelve Apostles and other fabulous scenery. Unfortunately, here at Las Catedrales, we had arrived not long before the tide started coming in, so our time was cut short by not wanting to be trapped somewhere along the cliffs. SERIOUSLY, be aware of tide times before you take a long walk here as you could get stranded without a way out. Be prepared to take terrific pics, as you can see by the pics that other reviewers have left here on this Trip Advisor site. If you're in the area, or traveling along Spain's northern coast between Gijon and A Coruna, DO NOT MISS THIS!! Enjoy.....

Check when is the low tide before going. And then get lost in its charming caves and cliffs. After this just try any restaurant around in the main road, almost al are good!

Very unique. Easy parking. A wonderful area for a long walk, then return for coffee. It is not a half day tour, but worth it.

Spain is a great country for vacationing but most people usually go to the South/ costa brava / Costa del sol. Galicia is one of those hidden secrets. Known mostly for the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia offers an amazing coast with sandy and very clean beaches, amazing food and not the over-tourism which is known in other parts of Spain. Playa de las Catedrales has long been one of those well-kept hidden secret in Galicia (not anymore since it was filmed for National Geographic). Make sure you go in the afternoon when the tide is low so that you get to walk on the beach and visit the rock formations. Both the beach route and hill route should be "walked" as they offer different views of this amazing landscape. Summer, especially August, can get crowded but out of season you shouldn't have any problems (September/October is great! Still very much warm and almost no tourists). Make sure you bring your flip-flops or wear shorts (at least pants which you can pull up) since you can get wet by the water/waves even by low tide.

Great place and great views. I would recommend to check the tides in advance in order to maximise your time walking through. Packing there is complicated because there is a limited space and always is full.

If you can plan to be there at low tide it is well worth the traffic and parking congestion to see these beautiful rock formations. We arrived at around 2pm and there was plenty of time to park (we turned right and parked in large field with the thousands of other cars) and walk for 15-20 minutes to the base of the beach to wander around these wonders of nature. Large rock formations of unusual shapes. There are safe but many steps to go down to the beach so be forewarned if steps are an issue. A very nice detour.

It is a very nice and interesting place!!!! The view is fantastic!!! Since we went when the sea was high, we could not go through it! I do understand how spectacular it is and that is why is very touristic!!! But it is not a place to see twice!!!

The rock formations of this beach can only be seen, photographed, and truly enjoyed if you are there during low tide. Otherwise, it is just another nice beach on the north coast of Spain, track the tides. If you cannot arrive for low tide, not worth the deviation. It is right off the main highway the crosses the entire north of Spain, Autovia del Cantabrico. It has a high oriced and average outdoor casual dining place and the only paying bathrooms I have seen in Spain, costing .50 Euros! Not handicap friendly or easy access for elderly.Over-rated natural attraction. Water very clean for swimming but very cold.

The car park isn't very big, so it gets filled up very quickly, especially during peak seasons, so allocate some time for this as you may have to wait or drive round and round, waiting for someone to leave. When the tide is high, some beaches and formations disappear, but walking along the cliffs can be a thrilling experience as long as you don't go too close, particularly if it's very windy. When the tide is low, you can walk from beach to beach, in and out of the arches and caves...For more information and photos, visit my travel & photography blog, nodirectionsknown.
