A lovely spot. We approached it from the East, but have been told that the road from the West is much better. Our road deteriorated into a rough track for the last couple of miles. The surrounding countryside and the river in the gorge are stunning, although from our viewpoint we didn't really see a waterfall - it's more like white water rapids.

We seemed to drive for well over an hour. At one time we thought we were driving through peoples gardens. Once we found the cattle grid gate the road appeared ok. What a mistake. The road down is one way only we were lucky that nothing was coming the other way. There are no places, driving down, where you could pull over. Once down it was more like small rapids. Our car on several occasions struggled to climb back up. Perhaps we were lucky visiting in November. After returning to the cattle gate a camper van was intending to go down. There is no way a camper van would manage to climb back up the road, especially if wet. If you want to visit it's probably best to walk and park at the top, but make sure you have sturdy shoes on.

This is NOT Niagra falls. It is not even a real waterfall but instead a small rapids..... However, if you drive from Mertola on the road to Beja (N122) then the drive to Pulo do Lobo is wonderful. The road takes you through the National park and is worth the 1hr round trip from Mertola. DO NOT drive on the route to or from Serpa (N255), you miss all of the natural beauty of the drive from the other direction. There is also a steep walk down to the waterfront from the Serpa road, i would bet most people dont bother and just look from the cliff top because of this.

We travelled here on our scooters, the long hilly and winding road down to the waterfall was an experience in itself ! But well worth it. I would love to see this in the winter after the heavy rains. a lovely peaceful area, just the sound of the water crashing...wonderful.

These waterfalls were recommended in a Dutch newspaper, but we were quite disappointed when we finally got there. It is a 30 minutes drive from Mertola and we were hoping to be able to walk to the waterfront but the access was hard if not dangerous. Fencing around viewing point was fragile. Rock formations were impressive; don't wear flip flops if you plan to go for a walk. When we had lunch in Mertola afterwards, the waiter told us a girl had to be rescued there by helicopter a couple of months ago because she was stuck between the rocks. So beware, Pulo do Lobo is for nature lovers and not for swimmers.

It´s divided in 2 spaces. If you want a few beers with seafood and tapas or a typical and traditional food. This is a very good place to eat.

We walked by the river Guadiana in a round trip of about 4 miles. We saw many turtles in the river, an adder amoung the rocks and eagles flying above

Portugal has so much nature and history to offer tourists if you are just prepared to travel away from the coast and liaise with the locals

It is a long but scenic drive, you keep wondering when you will finally arrive - don't be deterred by the gate and signs which imply that you are about to enter private land. Read carefully and you will see that you are allowed to proceed. The gorge is pretty dramatic, especially with the exceptionally high water levels when we visited. The really great thing was that we were the only people there which added to the experience. It is certainly a beautiful place.Definitely best approached from the west, where you can drive close to the river - the eastern approach looked much more tricky with a steep descent on foot.

It was a very long drive, really long! However, if you have the time and enjoy natural beauty, don't miss out on visiting this place.

Apart from other nice hiking trails, there are plenty including Pulo do Lobo. A must do if you get nice weather.
