Decided to try the "old cinema". In bury St Edmunds. We used to take the kids her when small, but then a bigger cinema opened near bye.Big comfy sofas, armchairs and cushions. The film was excellent, but what excited us the most was the cafe downstairs. What a hidden gem. A Canadian chef has made the menu his own, and has brought Canadian dishes to Suffolk. The hot menu has plenty of variety in choice , you can build your own burger, a small menu lets you mix and match your burger and accompaniments. The sweet potato chips are crisp and beautifully cooked. There was 8 different cakes on display along with home made pies, scones and the Canadian favourite Nanaimo bars. A salad bar is full of unusual salad ingredient and not your bog standard lettuce. If you haven't finished your drink.( it's a licensed bar). You can take your drink up to the cinema. Maybe I shouldn't write this review as it will mean other people will find this gem and we won't be able to get seats! It had free wiifi too

Afternoon brunch and "the film" we had excellent tea, proper pot and cup n saucer, chicken club and BLT freshly made in the really nice cafe bar in the foyer although my idea of a club sandwich is three slices , toasted etc the chicken club was a toasted but more like a sub aka "subway" but lovely nice salad and vinegret - more time required for the wider menu. Burger next time. The film. ! Take pretty woman, change the lotus for an R8 add some bondage ;-) women meets man man likes women women want to change man. I wanted to shout "red" several times evidently it's a close facsimile of the first book ( wife's comment) , lol Definitely go again and the second film to.

I love it here, it's a small, friendly and excellently run cinema with really good seating. Even the snacks are above the norm.

What a wonderful place to have discovered ! The cinema cafe is great with a healthy selection of homemade food including delicious cakes. The staff are friendly and helpful. The cinema is the most comfortable I have ever visited with roomy seats you sink into or sofas, if you like to cuddle up. The films are up to date and the quality of the sound is excellent. I cannot fault this lovely little cinema and cafe.

This is Best Cinema Experience You Can Have! A great bold fashioned cinema with online book, comfy seats and even sofas! You can take drinks from the bar to your seat, its a small cosy intimate place. I cannot think of any way I could improve it. OUTSTANDING!

The Abbeygate, now in private hands again, I think is a wonderful little cinema in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. It has a small restaurant over two floors, a bar, a tea room as well as two very well appointed screens. The sound quality is excellent. you are allowed to take in your drinks from the bar, it has reclining seats in Screen two and a mixture of couches and seats in screen 1.It is so good now and has great staff. over the years it has had many names and owners but it is now the best it has ever been.

Great cinema -comfy chairs and good leg room. Only problem is getting beverages before a show as there can be queues -beware!

Had booked seats at the cinema and my partner had dinner here beforehand. Lovely ambience and comfortable setting. Only criticism was that the food took too long to arrive. As most people who eat here are there to watch a film they have a limited amount of time availabe, they need to find a way to speed things up a bit without compromising on quality. Would go again but would leave plenty of time before film start time.

I have been coming here for over 30 years and it's latest incarnation is the best of the lot. The films are current, the seats are comfortable and you can take your drinks in with you. The attached cafe is roomy but intimate with a great menu at reasonable prices to complete a lovely half day out.

I have now used this cafe for coffee and a chat on several occasions. It is clean, pleasant, comfortable and well run. The coffee and light snacks I have eaten are very attentively served and of a good quality, if at the top end of acceptable prices. A little delay can sometimes occur if busy, but the staff do a very good job to keep this to a minimum without any drop in standards.

This is a great theatre! The seats are roomy, and there are even couch seats. They have a full bar and restaurant (Number 4 Hatter Street). The cup holders are even made to be able to accommodate a wine glass (bonus). They are normally only shown two or three movies a day as there are only two screens, but they have good options. They do lots of specials where they show plays or concerts or older films. They also have days just for families with little ones. This is a great alternative to the big cinemas (which are great for their own things). And definitely try their build your own burgers!

I love this cinema! Comfy seats, take in a glass of wine or cuppa, great cafe on the premises, latest films shown. What more could you want?

Centrally located, small but not too small; good auditorium, good bar and food, good programming. A pleasant experience overall.
