My wife and I visited Goodrich castle in mid December and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was a perfect time, for us, to visit as we were the only people there, so could take our time and really absorb the atmosphere, without the distraction of other visitors. My best tip is The audio listening device is a must!!! Also if you are going as a couple as opposed to a family outing, go out of season or in the winter months and experience this castle as if it were your own!

This was a great visit and spent almost two hours in total there. You and the dog have access to all the areas of the castle remains including upstairs rooms, outer grounds in the moat and view points are outstanding. Dogs are allowed in all areas of the castle, gift shop and surrounding grounds; the only exception is inside the tea room but there is ample outdoor seating area (seating area always available while tea shop is open) to sit with the dog for one of the best cream teas I have had and you can visit the tea rooms without paying entry to the castle if you so wish. There was lots of information given within the castle about the history of each area and you could actually picture the amount of activity this castle had seen during it's time of use. The only thing to be aware of is that there is lots of uneven ground and some areas are only accessible via narrow or steep stair cases and can be very dark so if you have mobility difficulties it may be quite challenging in places.Highly recommend if you are interested in history and even if not I would recommend for the views.

English heritage property so once again free entry for us otherwise its £16.60 for a family (February 2015). Goodrich Castle (satnav HR9 6HY) is a Norman castle which was lived in for 500 years before the Civil War, and more accurately, the invention of the mortar cannon which destroyed some of the outer walls and thus ended its occupation. I was expecting it to be in a far worse state of ruin but i was pleasantly surprised at what is preserved including the chapel, the guards room and the original keep (the oldest part of the castle). We spent 2 hours here without realising and that's without listening to an audio tour (available from the shop).I've explored around 30 castles all over Britain and this castle, hidden away in a small Herefordshire town, is a real nugget. Remember to bring your camera for some atmospheric shots. I have posted a few a took myself there.Be wary to check opening times before you set off as this castle closes weekdays during the winter months, opening only on a weekend. Also, in the gift shop they sell an English Heritage beer called Wassail which costs £3.25 for a sizeable 500ml bottle and is a real flavoursome beer. I bought another two to take home!Overall, if you are in the area i recommend this to you.

We are members of English Heritage of which Goodrich Castle is one of its visitor attractions. A very well preserved castle with lots to learn (we took 2 young granddaughters) Dogs on leads are welcome and the coffee shop is divine. Another bonus is that the coffee and souvenir shops are accessible without having to pay to access the castle. Great for a morning coffee and a chat

My husband and I visited Goodrich Castle in February and were very impressed - it's a real must-see in the area. The castle ruins are fascinating in themselves, and provide some stunning views of the Wye Valley. It's particularly interesting to visit a castle where we know exactly the reason it fell into ruins (and 'Roaring Meg', the cannon that did most of the job, is on display in the courtyard).I'd definitely recommend asking for the audio guide (included in the entrance price) - it really brought the castle to life. It was clear, well-thought out and, most importantly, interesting. We left feeling that we'd got a real grasp on how the castle had once looked, and had noticed lots of details that we would most likely have overlooked otherwise.

The castle and its surroundings are superb, I would recommend it to anyone! The cafe is excellent, we call in for a latte and scone or bowl of soup every saturday.

A must visit if you are in the area. Make sure you ask for the audio guide; there's no additional charge. £1 to park all day, wrap up warm if going in Winter months. Very interesting and the views are really something else - beautiful. Stopped in the little cafe and enjoyed a lovely hot chocolate, didn't eat ourselves but food looked nice.

We enjoyed our trip around Goodrich Castle. It must have been a very modern castle, in its day; plenty of latrines, as my partner pointed out(?)! Would like to return on a warmer day with our daughter.

This castle is a must visit if you are in the area. The castle itself is quite well preserved and there are great views to be had of the local area from the top of the keep. What was a bonus was the availability of the audio guides given to each visitor included in the price. The commentary gave the visitor more of an insight into the life and workings of the castle as well as the life history. Well done English Heritage and the Castle staff.

The castle is situated in a prime position that gives you amazing views of the surrounding countryside. The comprehensive audio tour covers the history of all areas of the castle and highlights some of its unique aspects such as the fact that it contains one of the most complete sets of domestic buildings in a castle in England. I found the information about domestic life within the castle particularly interesting, especially the importance placed on having lavish meals.

Visited here here on a rather cold and wet day but enjoyed the audio tour which explained everything about the castle and it's past.Would recommend that you wear appropriate footwear as there are plenty of uneven surface. Will return here again maybe when it's a little warmer.

We loved our visit to this old castle. We explored the moat, and climbed the spiral staircase to the top go the keep. Only scared it was the shooters seemed very close- found a dead pheasant on the path on the way back to the shop. Good tearoom
