Food on the expensive side, but the surroundings lovely. Breakfast very good with a wide range of items -loved the porridge with whiskey and cream. Dinner average

60th birthday treat for my husband. Location lovely and driving up to the hotel entrance impressive. Expectation very high. Reception very busy. Room spacious and clean but beds not comfortable, bathroom door lock faulty and toilet seat not secure. Dining in the the Oak Restaurant was an experience. Although it was pleasing to the eye the food was overly priced and average. Service was average too. Breakfast had a good selection of breads, fruit, yogurts, but cereal selection poor and the cooked breakfast items were cold. Only the eggs were warm. Not of 5* standard. Lifts constantly used by hotel staff moving trolleys and loud banging of doors throughout the night. Not impressed at all a d my husband and I were glad we only stayed the one night.

I gave stayed here a number of times on business and have not tried the golf which I am told is excellent. The spa is good but the gym has too few cross trainers, etc for peak times. The rooms are well furnished and comfortable with free wifiBreakfast is a buffet

Just back from a short break in the Slieve Donard Hotel and it did not disappoint. Our room overlooked the front of the hotel on the 3rd floor and the views of the snow capped Mournes were stunning as were the views over Newcastle. Room was excellent clean tidy and warm. The spa facilities with views over the Mournes are superb. A very slight criticism is that during busy periods it can be difficult to get a sun lounger or a chair but this did not really spoil our enjoyment of.the facilities. Breakfast was lovely and sourced from a range of local suppliers whom the hotel like to acknowledge. Staff throughout the hotel werefriendly and helpful. One of our favourite places to stay. Highly recommend it.

Arrived at the hotel on Sunday for a 1 night stay.We had a lovely clean warm room and found the restaurant and bar staff very attentive. The buffet breakfast was superb and had all you could want and more. The only disappointing thing was the frosty receptionist when checking in and out of the hotel. . We will definitely go back to the Slieve Donard Hotel.

we have just come back from our second stay at the slieve donard and once again we have had a great time. its a beautiful hotel with a beautiful view in all directions. great atmosphere and very stylish in all parts. staff were very helpful and very polite. have to give a special mention to duty manager john breslin who made our stay perfect. we also brought another couple with us from scotland and they said it was the best and nicest hotel they ever stayed in and we have to second it. if you want luxury and style this is the place to go. we will be back very soon.

This is not the biggest or most challenging mountain in the world! It's not the most glamorous or well serviced town but I can assure you the views from Donard on a clear day are totally breathtaking. The colours and contrasts are unmatched. From the saddle between Donard and Commedagh you can see the peaks and valleys of the Kingdom of Mournes, the sprawling Donard wood and the spectacular setting of Newcastle town rolling down into the blue of the sea. It's not an easy walk with some challenging parts but if you take your time and wear good footwear its achievable. Enjoy

Walked Slieve Donard early December .....walking at that time of year has advantages and disadvantages.Advantages: Quieter; Clear air; see for miles Disadvantages: got to wait for the right weather; very cold on top; should only walk if you are experienced in that type of weather. The walk itself really only provides problems on the lower reaches ..... there is a large free car park at the edge of town and allows easy access to the hill path ..... once on the path it switches a few times from one side of the glen river to the other and the start is through woodland, rocks and tree roots are slippy and great care is needed at this section ..... once through the woodland and onto the hill proper there is a good stone path up the hill to the saddle where you veer left and up another path along the Mourne wall - this wall was built in early 1900s to keep livestock away from the reservoir - it goes over 15 hills and is a huge feat of building, I believe it took about 18 years ..... views from the top of Slieve Donard are fantastic and makes the walk worthwhile. I would allow 4.5 to 5 hours for the entire walk and hillwalking boots are essential ..... there are facilities such as toilets in Newcastle. I enjoyed my walk and visit to Newcastle.

Went here got a treat for my wife's Special Birthday. Staff very friendly from the moment we arrived . They went out of their way to make us enjoy our stay. We had a lovely room with a sea view and it was very well furnished. A great big bathroom with bath and separate shower. Our bed was very comfortable. The whole set up of this hotel is to just relax and enjoy the location. Great place .

This was a lovely hike, the walk up through the forest following the river gave us views of flowing waterfalls and crystal clear pools which were beautiful and something different before the real hike started out in the open, would advise bringing a jacket and water as even on a warm day it is quite chilly at the top especially if its windy and took us about 4hrs up and down

This walk is so worth it - we had a clear day and walked up from the Donard car park just behind Main Street and next to playing fields. follow the river up to the saddle and then straight up following the wall to the top. To the north strangford lough is laid out and in the distance you can see Isle of Man and cave hill above Belfast. It's truly a highlight in Northern Ireland ......a warning though - a moderate to good level of fitness is needed and given the weather can change so quickly a jacket is required.
