Bomarsund as the Russian fortress ruined during Crimean War. Now it's a small museum and a chain of very picturesque ruins. The fortress isn't only a small ruins near the museum building, but it also includes several towers on the rocks with stunning views on the Baltic Sea and small islands. The best views are from the Prästö and Notvik Towers. It takes some time to get there but the rad is very beautiful.

Nice place, with sand beach. Caffe is near. Free parking and entrance and only few tourists. No need more than 30 minuts.

This is an interesting visit. It can be reached by bus, bike or of course car. The ruins are free of charge and well marked with signs and walking path. There is a small museum with a limited array of items on display but a very good 15 minute film shown in three languages that helps understand the building and attack of the fortress. There is a recommended fee for the museum. It is possible to hike the 4 Km around the ruins but it can all be seen with much less walking. A good walk is the 5 Km back toward the Kastle.

Thi system of forts was designed by Russia to stop British pirates from plundering the northern Baltic. Interesting is that the first ever Victoria Cross was given to an Irish sailor, who saved his ship, when a bomb landed onboard, while the ship was attacking Bomarsund in 1854.

On a remote shore in the Åland Islands between Sweden and Finland are the ruins of a huge fort that was built by the Russians in the 1840s. It was attacked and taken by a combined force of French and British. The ruins are splendid, with visitor information boards throughout the vast area. There is what I think must be the smallest museum that I have visited. Remote it is but it was manned by a friendly lady and we watched a video outlining the history in English. Memorials to British VC winners and to the fallen can be found on site.

A must visit for anyone visiting the A land Islands. Interesting and in a beautiful setting. Twenty minutes from Mariehamm.

Every time i visit Åland i like to go looking this ruins....its amazing to see and read history of this huge fortress area...its still possible to image past time..and how its was owned and ruled by three countries Russia-Sweden and Finland...also landscape perfect...ounly thing i was missing maybe summertime would be nice to drinking coffee somewhere there and lookink around but i didnt see any places

The site of the Bommarsund Museum was once used by my Great-grandfather, Gustaf Erik Gustafson, who was a government pilot in the mid 1800's. This was not his live-in cottage, that, where my Grandmother was born, was about 1/2 mile away. Great-grandfather guided ships through the archipelago channels to the main port of Mariehamn. It was not a museum in 1982, when we visited. we were there in June, 1982.

We visited the little museum and Bomarsund, where the very helpful guardian told us all about the fortress, and showed us a short film, which outlined the history. Unique place to visit.

The Battle of Bomarsund was fought by an Anglo-French task force against Russian defenses at Bomarsund during the Crimean War. The Anglo-French task force won and the fortress war as a result destroyed, so only the ruins of the fortress remains.This is sight really worth seeing! The actual ruins are outdoors - of cause – and there is no entrance and no fees. There is a little museum in a small pilot-cabin across the bridge the is for free as well.

Русская крепость, пушки, большая часть разрушена. Но обязательно стоит туда попасть. Грандиозное сооружение. Виды опять же открываются замечательные.

Una pena que este fuerte fuera destruido en uno de los numerosos conflictos bélicos que tuvo lugar en la isla... Si se hubiera mantenido intacto, probablemente sería uno de las atracciones turísticas más impresionantes de las islas Åland.Actualmente solo se encuentran algunos muros intactos, así como varios cañones y algunos carteles indicando el tamaño real de toda la estructura.Mucha gente suele pasar al lado de la fortaleza sin darse cuenta, ya que está algo mal señalizado. Normalmente es la presencia de grupos de turistas la que indica que ahí algo de importancia.

Für geschichtlich Interessierte kann der Besuch unter Umständen von Bedeutung sein. Ausser ein paar Mauerresten und Kanonen gibt es aber nicht viel zu besichtigen.

Ist ein netter Zwischenstopp wenn man eine Tour über die Inseln macht.Es gibt ein paar ganz nette Fotomotive, wie das bei uns sehr beliebte Foto bei dem die Kinder auf einer Kanone sitzen. Ansonsten gibt es ein paar Mauern und eine wunderschöne Landschaft zu sehen.

Посмотреть стоит. Грандиозная русская крепость, самая западная в Российской империи. Недостроенная, но уже захваченная. Чтобы пройти вдоль всего периметра - требуется несколько часов, но оно того стоит. В дождь будьте осторожны на скалах - камни очень скользкие. Понятная логистика, указатели и описания на русском языке. Изумительный вид с горы страсти (или дьявола, или там еще у нее есть названия) - я там оставил довольно высокую пирамиду из камней. Пушки с российским гербом. Отчетливые следы от попадания ядер на стенах фортов - как будто они вчера обстреливались. Остались сомнения в аутентичности лицевой стороны крепости (со стороны моста) - слишком уж аккуратно выложены громадные плитки))
