Who would have thought that this beautiful castle was a gift to a secretary of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf in the 1601. During the early 1600 Estonia was actually a part of the Swedish Empire ! Visiting the castle mid October is actually a bit too late as there's hardly anyone there and the restaurant was very empty in fact no one a part from us. Consequently we decided not to eat there. The fee for visiting the different castle floors was 5 Euro per person. No guided tour. When it come to the wheelchair access, it's only to the ground floor, where the restaurant is located.

Too overcrowded, in good shape and well restored, have a nice walk in the park. The park is a nice place to arrange picknick.

Alatskivi Castle is a charming castle in Alatskivi, Tartu County, Estonia, about 40 kilometres north of Tartu, close to Lake Peipsi. The castle was originally built in the late 16th century, but was rebuilt from 1876 to 1885 by Baron Arved von Nolcken. He was inspired by the royal residence at Balmoral, Scotland. It is a romantic castle surrounded with a beautiful park. Unusual for manor houses is the exhibition in the basement, displaying waxworks of servants. We didn’t eat at the restaurant, so I can’t say anything about that. But I would recommend to have lunch in the Fish and Onion restaurant in Kolkja ( 7 km from Alatskivi ). It’s on the Onion Route and offers ethnic cuisine of Russian old believers. www.alatskiviloss.ee

A charming and beautifully restored castle set in the Estonian countryside of Tartumaa county, close to Tartu (Estonia's "Oxbridge") and Peipsijarve. Inside is a baronial style restaurant, an exhibition of 19th century life in a Baltic German manor plus a museum to the famous Estonian (later exiled in Sweden) composer Eduard Tubin. Close to the Onion Route (Sibulatee) which is still home to the ethnic Russian Old Believers.

Very beautiful renovated castle close to the Lake Peipsi with beautiful garden. Inside is a museum of Estonian composer Eduard Tubin. Had a very short walk inside & outside. It was nice experience.

A charming castle in rural Estonia close both to Tartu and Lake Peipsi, Alatskivi is easily reached by a bus from Tartu. The castle museum is compact and quickly surveyed, but you can spend quite a while in the surrounding park if you so choose. Don't forget to have a lunch in the castle restaurant, the kitchen is quite ambitious combining traditional Estonian dishes with fresh local ingredients (e.g. fresh fish from the lake Peipsi) and modern cuisine. It is slow food since everything is prepared from the very beginning, but the results are definitely worth waiting for. The prices are very moderate.

Красивый замок, от Тарту до него ехать около часа (на автобусе). Увы, зимой он открыт только в будние дни, в выходные работает только ресторан (с 12.00).
