No need to be a fan of Alexandre Dumas, the famous XIX century novelist to enjoy but you will become one after this visit. Thanks to the famous historian broadcaster. Alain Decaux and his association des Amis d'Alexandre Dumas to treat the visitor as a friend more than a guest. You could think of a 'typical french plat du jour every Saturday and Sunday lunches!

Coming from Versailles, we were on our way to the chateau of Alexandre Dumas. Though not easy to find, the houses and grounds are worth the detour. The chateau is miniature in size compared to Versailles, but in some ways more interesting. For the author of The Three Musketeers, a house for writing sits above the chateau in the garden. It was an enchanting place and we enjoyed learning more about Dumas.

As a die-hard Musketeer, how could I not go to honor the man who gave us Athos, Aramis, Porthos, Richelieu, and all the characters he so skillfully crafted into the best romantic swashbuckling of all time. To have lived (and possibly gotten skewered) in those times...Quelle Vie! Monsieur Dumont, I salute you.A shame that he enjoyed the house for such a short time, live hard, die hard. On the other hand, 40+ mistresses can really take it out of you.The grounds are engaging and delightful, shame about the highway below. Easy to get to. The docents are wonderful and on the Sunday we went we had actors portraying the man and one of his characters. The architecture is a real trip for period house enthusiasts like me.While there be sure to visit Le Machine de Marley and the aqueduct at the top of the hill as water lifted from the Sein went on its way to Versailles.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the visit to Alexandre Dumas' chateau de Monte Cristo. The house and location wet beautiful. The house was a good size -not too large and stuffed with the history of Dumas and family. I am getting tired of visiting all the Chateau in the Paris area and this was just enough different to make me glad I visited. There was also his Chateau D'If which we were not able to enter, but was his prison apparently where he worked. It is a short train ride from Saint-Lazare train station on RER L to Marly-le-Roi. We rode bicycles to the chateau but I think there are also shuttles. Give it a look if you, I think you'll like it.

The Chateau de Monte Cristo is a beautifully restored chateau set in magnificent grounds. If you are interested in history and Alexandre Dumas, you can spend a couple of hours reading all about his amazing life. But you would also enjoy a visit here just to see the gardens. I'd recommend taking a picnic lunch to enjoy in the garden. Lots of seating is provided throughout the grounds.Very friendly English speaking staff member in the shop.

We went here for a short trip.To be honest, the expectation is quite low, but when arrive in the location, we have to admit that we are wrong. The entrance to the chateau is little bit far from the main chateau itself and perception once we arrived in the entrance is not really impressive. But once we passed the entrance and walk in the garden, then we realized this place is small but very romantic. So forget about big massive chateau here, instead you will find quite small "house" surrounding by beautiful garden. It is recommended to enjoy the view here with family and couple.

We went in October for the salon du Livre Jeunesse (an annual event) which was a huge disappointment as there was virtually nothing of interest for teenagers. The workshops and the books for sale were very much oriented for small children aged 4-8.However, we were thoroughly enchanted by the castle and its grounds! Located opposite the main castle is the tiny, charming Chateau d’If which was Alexandre Dumas’ office, where he wrote every day. The author, who purchased the property and had the castles built, lived here for only 2 years at the height of his glory days until his debts caught up with him. In the main castle, which is not very large, there are many documents, photographs and paintings documenting the history of the Dumas family and its origins in the Dominican Republic. Of particular interest is the Moorish style room and its exquisite décor, which the author brought back from one of his trips to Tunisia. To reach the Chateau de Monte Cristo from Paris, one can take the RER to St Germain en Laye (visit the castle there) and then take the No 10 bus in the direction of Marly le Roi. Worth a visit!

if you are in the area definitely worth a visit. Small but full of interesting facts about Alexander Dumas. Pretty little garden.

Good if you want a local sightseeing option, then you can have a lie in before the main coach tour!

I lived across the street and used to play in the overgrown ruins from 1962-1965. As a young teenager american in Paris I could not/did not appreciate what I thought was just a pile of old rocks albeit it was a Great place to play! Took my wife, daughters and grandkids back 45 years later and was absolutley gobsmacked at the beauty before me. Completly and perfectly renovated thanks to a benefactor it is indeed a hidden jewel of a trip to Paris. While my family did the whole tour and loved it I retreated to the grotto in the garden to remember Bernedette and that first kiss so many years ago!!

It was like a fairytale castle, beautiful grounds and the chateaux has been restored to such a wonderful degree. It is a secret gem. I wish everyone took the time to visit. The story of Dumas and his racial heritage being a mix of Haitian and French is also intriguing and it should be more widely known and respected.I urge you to either take the RER to St Germain then catch a bus which is short ride. Or to take a charming bus ride from La Defense to St Germain en Laye, it gets you into the atmosphere of what is to come. EXCELLENT!!!!
